RateSafe App Wins DASH Hackathon, Empowers Truck Drivers with Data-Driven Load Decisions

RateSafe, a new app developed by Vantage Logistics' Sean Connolly, won the 17-entry DASH Hackathon. It uses SONAR API and driver-specific data to give plain-English load decisions. A beta web app is expected within two months.

RateSafe App Wins DASH Hackathon, Empowers Truck Drivers with Data-Driven Load Decisions

Truck drivers and owner-operators now have a new tool to evaluate load offers beyond just the rate, thanks to RateSafe, the winning app from FreightWaves' Driver App Shortage Hackathon.

The Decision-Making Shortage

According to FreightWaves, the app was developed by Sean Connolly, Vice President and Director of Business Development at Vantage Logistics, a Columbus, Ohio-based third-party logistics company founded in 2014. Connolly built RateSafe using SONAR API data and personalized driver metrics to help owner-operators decide whether to 'take, avoid, or counter' a load. He emphasized that the real shortage in the industry is decision-making, not data.

“What I found was the real shortage was decision-making. You have so much data, but for a driver, you want to stay in your lane. You don’t maybe want to become a market analyst. You need decisions, you need them fast, you need them that fall in line with what your goals and expectations are to your own success.”

How RateSafe Works

Connolly, who taught himself to code roughly two years ago, logged an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 hours since mid-January building internal tools for Vantage before developing RateSafe. The app cross-references Sonar’s market analytics with each driver’s personalized operating costs, fuel economy, profit goals, and home-time expectations—inputs that vary widely across drivers and that brokers rarely weigh when tendering loads.

Factor Traditional Approach RateSafe Approach
Rate alone Primary decision driver One of several inputs
Fuel economy Not considered Personalized per driver
Home time Rarely factored Integrated as a goal
Market conditions Often ignored Analyzed via SONAR data
Decision output Accept or reject Take, avoid, or counter

Current Market Context

Connolly noted that the freight industry’s persistent focus on rate obscures the full picture. A high-paying haul into a soft market can strand a driver and erode any rate advantage on the next move. He pointed to three years of depressed spot rates as evidence of what happens when carriers operate without margin discipline, according to FreightWaves. The app is especially relevant for owner-operators navigating today’s volatile truckload market.

Broker and Shipper Implications

For logistics managers and brokers, RateSafe could shift load acceptance dynamics. “Any good broker should want drivers to make good decisions,” Connolly said, according to FreightWaves. The app encourages more informed counteroffers and may reduce turnover in carrier networks by aligning loads with driver priorities. Connolly also cited carrier vetting and litigation risk as mounting concerns, noting that the average tenure of a transportation manager at a shipper or freight brokerage runs roughly two years—leaving many without institutional memory.

Next Steps

According to FreightWaves, a beta release of RateSafe is planned within two months, delivered as a web application to sidestep Apple App Store approval delays. Connolly plans to recruit owner-operators already in Vantage’s carrier network for initial testing and intends to work with the Sonar team to incorporate additional data indicators—including fuel indices—that were not fully integrated during the one-week hackathon build sprint.

Watch list: The beta launch, additional data integrations, and broader adoption among owner-operators will determine RateSafe’s impact on trucking operations.
