Meal-kit company Gousto is to close its Lincolnshire warehouse, putting 290 jobs at risk, as part of a consolidation strategy to reduce costs and eliminate duplication in its logistics network.
Warehouse consolidation details
According to the BBC, Gousto will shut its Clay Lake unit near Spalding, Lincolnshire and centralise production of its food boxes at one site in Warrington, Cheshire, where about 600 people work. The company said it had heavily invested in the Warrington facility. It also said running two warehouses was no longer efficient and was leading to duplication.
| Site | Location | Status | Employees affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clay Lake unit | Near Spalding, Lincolnshire | Closing | 290 jobs at risk |
| Warrington facility | Cheshire | Remains operational | Approx. 600 workers |
Reasons and executive comment
Founder and chief executive Timo Boldt said the closure was "an incredibly difficult proposal given the impact on our colleagues in Clay Lake, who have contributed enormously to Gousto's journey over a number of years." He added: "In a highly competitive food market, it is however essential that we operate as efficiently as possible so that we can continue to invest in our proposition and keep prices as low as possible for customers."
Implications for logistics operators
For 3PLs, freight operators, and logistics managers serving the food and drink sector, this move signals a potential shift in warehousing demand from the east of England to the North West. The Warrington facility, already employing 600, may see increased inbound and outbound logistics activity. Meanwhile, the closure of the Clay Lake unit will release significant warehouse capacity in the Spalding area, which could be taken up by other food producers or logistics providers.
The consolidation also highlights cost pressures in the meal-kit market, where efficient logistics are critical to margins. Operators relying on Gousto’s business may need to diversify their customer base or reposition assets.
