BYD Unveils Five-Minute EV Flash Charge in Europe

BYD has made a significant leap in electric vehicle (EV) technology by launching its five-minute Flash Charge in the UK and Europe. The technology was demonstrated at BYD's West London headquarters, where the Denza Z9 GT was charged from 10% to nearly 100% in just nine minutes. This advancement positions BYD as a leader in ultra-fast charging, with its chargers delivering a peak power of 1,500kW, far surpassing the current 350-400kW chargers available today.

European Rollout Strategy

Bono Ge, BYD's UK boss, announced plans to roll out 6,000 Flash Charging stalls outside of China by the end of 2027, with 3,000 in Europe and 300 in the UK. The company is collaborating with BYD dealers, Charge Point Operators (CPOs), and partners like supermarkets and fast-food restaurants to establish these charging locations. Ge emphasized that BYD's on-site battery storage solutions help mitigate the challenges of high-power charging outlets by reducing grid demand.

Cost and Infrastructure

Each Flash Charging stall costs between £500,000 and £1 million to install, depending on the complexity. The on-site batteries can be charged overnight when electricity is cheaper, potentially reducing costs for consumers. Ge mentioned that the ideal pricing for charging would be sub-50 pence per kilowatt hour, which is significantly cheaper than current ultra-rapid public chargers.

Feature Current Chargers BYD Flash Charge
Peak Power 350-400kW 1,500kW
Charge Time (10-70%) Hours 5 minutes
Cost per kWh 80-90p Sub-50p

Implications for the Automotive Industry

The introduction of BYD's Flash Charge technology could significantly alter the landscape of EV charging infrastructure. By reducing charging times to mere minutes, BYD addresses one of the major barriers to EV adoption. This move is likely to increase the competitiveness of EVs against traditional combustion engines, particularly in markets like the UK and Europe where infrastructure is rapidly evolving.

Diego Pareschi, BYD’s EV charging boss, highlighted that all BYD cars with the second generation of its Blade Battery technology will support Flash Charging. The company is also offering 18 months of free Flash Charging for Denza Z9 GT buyers, a strategy reminiscent of Tesla's early incentives.

Production Timeline

The rollout of BYD's Flash Charge technology is set to be completed by 2027, with installations beginning immediately. This ambitious timeline underscores BYD's commitment to expanding its footprint in the European market and enhancing the EV charging experience.
