Keralam deploys ANNAM.AI smart weather stations for climate-smart farming

The Kerala government, in partnership with IIT Ropar, is deploying ANNAM.AI smart weather stations across the state. The hyper-local weather intelligence system aims to help farmers make timely decisions on sowing, irrigation, and harvesting, reducing crop losses and improving productivity.

Keralam deploys ANNAM.AI smart weather stations for climate-smart farming

Keralam is leveraging home-grown AI innovation to build a smarter and more resilient agricultural ecosystem that directly benefits farmers and strengthens the State’s agricultural future. The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has been roped in to deploy AI-powered smart weather stations, ANNAM.AI, across the State as part of the Kerala government’s 100-day action plan to strengthen climate-smart agriculture and improve farm-level decision-making. This initiative demonstrates how advanced technology can help governments deliver timely, data-driven services to farmers while enhancing long-term agricultural resilience.

Climate-Smart Agriculture in Kerala

Pushpendra Singh, Project Director of ANNAM.AI and Dean at IIT Ropar, said the initiative is aimed at improving farmers’ access to reliable weather information, enabling better planning, reducing input costs and promoting informed farming practices. The hyper-local weather intelligence system will provide accurate, real-time weather information, helping farmers make timely decisions on sowing, irrigation, crop protection and harvesting. It is expected to help them prepare for changing weather conditions, minimise crop losses and improve productivity through weather-based advisories tailored to local conditions.

Keralam is one of India’s most climate sensitive regions. With over 3,000 mm of annual rainfall and the distinction of being the first landmass to receive the Southwest Monsoon, the State experiences sharp microclimate variations, from the 600 km coastline to the Western Ghats. These variations make hyper-local weather intelligence not just useful, but essential.

Keralam also has one of India’s most fragmented agricultural landscapes as 92 per cent of farms are below 1 hectare, and most holdings are mixed, multilayer systems involving coconut, pepper, banana, spices and vegetables. These farms depend heavily on precise humidity, sunlight and rainfall conditions.

Why Kerala is a Test Bed

Deploying ANNAM.AI’s indigenous weather stations directly supports the Government’s 100-day action plan by strengthening real-time climate monitoring, improving disaster preparedness and enabling climate-smart agriculture at the village level. Keralam’s strong governance and disaster management capabilities make it the ideal early adopter for such national priority technologies.

Keralam is uniquely positioned to lead India’s AI-driven agricultural transformation. The State combines high digital literacy, strong youth participation in farming and diversified small holdings, making it a perfect test-bed for next generation climate and crop intelligence systems.

Insights from Keralam will help India to understand:

  • How mixed, multilayer farms respond to hyper-local climate variations;
  • Build advisory models for spices, plantation crops, fruits and vegetables;
  • Develop disaster response algorithms for high rainfall, high risk regions;
  • Create a national template for farm-level climate intelligence;
  • Demonstrate rapid adoption of AI tools in states with strong governance.

Keralam’s learning will directly inform national rollouts of AI-powered weather networks, crop advisory systems and climate risk prediction models, shaping India’s agricultural intelligence infrastructure for the future.

Expected Benefits for Farmers

Farmers can expect tangible improvements within just a few seasons. The expected outcomes include:

  • More accurate rainfall and humidity forecasts for sowing and harvesting;
  • Early warnings for crop diseases and pest outbreaks, especially for pepper, banana, coconut and spices;
  • Better irrigation decisions using real time soil moisture data;
  • Reduced crop damage during extreme weather events.

These improvements are designed to reduce input costs and promote informed farming practices, directly addressing the challenges posed by Kerala's fragmented and climate-sensitive agricultural landscape.

The deployment in Keralam serves as a pilot for a larger national AI-driven ecosystem. By demonstrating rapid adoption and governance integration, Kerala will provide a model for other states. The project also aligns with national priorities for climate-smart agriculture and disaster preparedness.
