Keralam is leveraging home-grown AI innovation to build a smarter and more resilient agricultural ecosystem that directly benefits farmers and strengthens the State’s agricultural future. The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has been roped in to deploy AI-powered smart weather stations, ANNAM.AI, across the State as part of the Kerala government’s 100-day action plan to strengthen climate-smart agriculture and improve farm-level decision-making. This initiative demonstrates how advanced technology can help governments deliver timely, data-driven services to farmers while enhancing long-term agricultural resilience.
Climate-Smart Agriculture in Kerala
Pushpendra Singh, Project Director of ANNAM.AI and Dean at IIT Ropar, said the initiative is aimed at improving farmers’ access to reliable weather information, enabling better planning, reducing input costs and promoting informed farming practices. The hyper-local weather intelligence system will provide accurate, real-time weather information, helping farmers make timely decisions on sowing, irrigation, crop protection and harvesting. It is expected to help them prepare for changing weather conditions, minimise crop losses and improve productivity through weather-based advisories tailored to local conditions.
Keralam is one of India’s most climate sensitive regions. With over 3,000 mm of annual rainfall and the distinction of being the first landmass to receive the Southwest Monsoon, the State experiences sharp microclimate variations, from the 600 km coastline to the Western Ghats. These variations make hyper-local weather intelligence not just useful, but essential.
Keralam also has one of India’s most fragmented agricultural landscapes as 92 per cent of farms are below 1 hectare, and most holdings are mixed, multilayer systems involving coconut, pepper, banana, spices and vegetables. These farms depend heavily on precise humidity, sunlight and rainfall conditions.

Deploying ANNAM.AI’s indigenous weather stations directly supports the Government’s 100-day action plan by strengthening real-time climate monitoring, improving disaster preparedness and enabling climate-smart agriculture at the village level.
