There’s Only One Google Smart Speaker Worth Buying Now

There’s Only One Google Smart Speaker Worth Buying Now

Google's smart speaker strategy has shifted to minimalism. According to WIRED's Nena Farrell, the tech giant's lineup is now simpler than ever: just a single speaker and two smart displays. This change follows the rollout of a new AI-powered assistant, Google Gemini for Home, replacing the longtime Google Assistant. For enterprise users and technology decision-makers evaluating smart assistants for office or home use, the choice has narrowed.

The Only Google Speaker Worth Buying

If you're in the market for a Google smart speaker, WIRED says there's only one worth picking up: the new Home Speaker. The name is a throwback to the 2016 original, but the design is new—looking more like an Apple HomePod Mini than past Google speakers. The Home Speaker replaces both the Nest Audio and Nest Mini. It's smaller than the Nest Audio but taller than the Nest Mini, packing a 58-mm full-range driver for well-rounded sound. The bass is not lacking, and Gemini's answers are detailed with impressively human speech patterns. WIRED reports that Gemini did slightly better at answering questions than Amazon's Alexa+. There is a subscription-based mode called Gemini Live, which can be toggled by saying "Hey Google, let's chat" for a more active conversation. The speaker comes with six months free of Google Home's standard plan. Touch controls adjust volume—tap the right side for volume up, left side for volume down, using the power cord as a reference.

What’s Google Gemini for Home?

Google's smart speakers were all powered by Google Assistant until this year. Google Gemini for Home is a version of Google's new AI assistant designed for the home ecosystem. It is compatible with the majority of Google's existing lineup, and the new Home Speaker is made with Gemini in mind. Some of its most powerful features require a subscription, but it can be used for free, unlike Amazon's Alexa+, which also has a subscription model. WIRED notes that Gemini Live, the conversational mode, is only available by subscription. The standard plan offers six months free with the Home Speaker.

The Older Smart Display That’s Still Great

WIRED expresses hope for a new Google smart display designed for Gemini, but also notes that Google rarely updates its lineup. The Nest Hub Max from 2019 remains perfectly serviceable. It is a favorite because it doubles as a digital photo frame using Google Photos. You can upload up to 15 GB for free (the free storage limit for your entire Google account). The Nest Hub Max has two 10-watt tweeters and a 30-watt woofer for solid sound, though the bass is lacking compared to newer speakers. The 10-inch screen is great for recipes, video streaming, and video calls with the 6.5-megapixel camera (127-degree field of view). The Nest Hub Max is compatible with Google Gemini for Home and Gemini Live if you have a subscription.

For decision-makers evaluating smart assistants for voice-controlled environments, the Home Speaker offers a modern, AI-equipped option, while the Nest Hub Max provides a screen-based experience. Both run the new Gemini AI, but the Home Speaker is the only dedicated speaker worth considering. The simplification of Google's lineup means fewer choices but clearer direction for buyers.
