The Bublue BuVortex V5, billed as “the world’s first active absorption skimmer,” uses a tiny whirlpool to draw debris into an underwater basket, ditching the conventional mouthlike chamber found on catamaran-style robots. According to WIRED reviewer Christopher Null, it is “the weirdest concept I’ve ever seen for cleaning the surface of a pool.”

Vortex Power: How the BuVortex Redefines Pool Skimming

Most pool skimmers float on the surface with a catamaran-like body, scooping leaves into a basket between two propeller-powered hulls. The BuVortex V5 works entirely differently. Instead of a mouth, it generates a miniature whirlpool that pulls nearby debris into its vortex. The force sinks leaves and traps them in a filter basket located underwater. This approach eliminates the need for a scooping mechanism and may reduce clogging.

Technical Specifications and Design

The Bublue BuVortex V5 weighs 11.5 pounds and is built around a central cylinder about a foot in diameter that houses the vortex-creation system. Above the cylinder sits the filter basket, which splits into two parts, including a netting that prevents trapped debris from escaping the whirlpool once it is sucked in. The compact design allows it to navigate pool surfaces without the wide footprint of traditional skimmers.

Real-World Performance: A Week in the Pool

Null tested the BuVortex V5 in his own pool for one week, giving it free rein to collect both standard organic debris and synthetic leaves. The device performed consistently, efficiently capturing debris within its vortex without the need for manual intervention. The whirlpool effect proved effective at drawing in leaves from a distance, though the author noted that very large debris might require the robot to pass multiple times.

The device exemplifies, without question, the weirdest concept I’ve ever seen for cleaning the surface of a pool.

While the BuVortex V5 is a consumer product, its innovative mechanism demonstrates how robotics can rethink even the simplest tasks. For enterprise technology leaders evaluating automation, the principle of reengineering a core function—here, debris capture—with a novel physical process offers a lesson in challenging established designs.
