Volvo Trucks to Launch Unattended Over-the-Air Updates

Volvo Trucks is poised to revolutionize fleet management with the introduction of unattended over-the-air software updates later this year. This new capability allows drivers to initiate updates, lock their trucks, and leave, minimizing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency.

Enhancing Fleet Productivity

Volvo Trucks North America President, Peter Voorhoeve, emphasized the importance of maximizing uptime for customers. With vehicles often operating 8 to 11 hours daily, any time saved translates directly into increased productivity. The unattended update feature is a significant milestone in Volvo's remote programming journey, which began eight years ago.

"Drivers will be able to start a software update, lock the truck and walk away, whether that’s for a break or at the end of the day, and return to an updated vehicle," said Voorhoeve.

From Manual to Automated Updates

Initially, Volvo's system required manual calls to request software packages, a process complicated by 30-day expiration windows. This was particularly challenging for fleets managing large numbers of vehicles. Madeline Sullivan of Volvo Trucks North America noted the complexity of keeping track of which trucks were up to date.

Earlier this year, Volvo introduced an automated deployment engine, similar to smartphone updates, resulting in over 80% of connected Volvo trucks running the latest software. This advancement has led to a 24% reduction in unplanned stops, with the system capable of handling up to 10,000 updates per day.

Expanded Capabilities and Future Prospects

The new unattended feature is enabled by Volvo's connected 24-volt platform, which supports updates to nearly every electronic control unit (ECU) on the vehicle. This expanded capability has proven valuable during recalls, allowing remote deactivation and subsequent over-the-air fixes without dealer visits.

Looking forward, this connectivity could allow fleets to purchase performance upgrades remotely, such as torque adjustments, further aligning commercial trucking with consumer electronics expectations.

Implications for Fleet Managers

For CTOs and digital transformation leaders in logistics, Volvo's unattended over-the-air updates represent a significant advancement in fleet management technology. By reducing downtime and simplifying the update process, fleets can maintain operational efficiency and reduce costs associated with unplanned maintenance. This innovation aligns with broader trends in logistics technology, emphasizing automation and connectivity to enhance productivity.

As Volvo Trucks continues to innovate, fleet managers should consider the potential benefits of integrating such technologies into their operations, ensuring their fleets remain competitive and efficient in a rapidly evolving industry.
