Trucking Safety Crisis: How ELD Self-Certification Is Killing People, Says Mark Hazelwood

FMCSA and DOT have removed more than 20,000 non-domiciled drivers and revoked 28,000 illegal CDLs, cutting roughly 30,000 legal-driver equivalents of capacity from U.S. road freight, according to Mark Hazelwood of Assured Telematics. The U.S. has 1,020 self-certified ELD providers versus Canada's 42 third-party-certified providers, enabling manipulated devices that log far more miles than legal limits allow. Caribe Transport II ruling that makes brokers liable for carrier negligence. About 90% of carriers are already connected, but the remaining 10% face failed broker connections if they do not comply.

Progressive's Mandatory ELD Switch? Some Small Trucking Fleets May Be Required to Switch ELD Providers.

Progressive Commercial's Smart Haul program may require some small trucking fleets to switch to Motive telematics devices as part of the underwriting process, not just for a discount. Failure to install devices within 30 days could lead to coverage cancellation, highlighting the evolution of telematics from a safety incentive to an insurance eligibility tool.

FMCSA Drops Rule Requiring Printed ELD Manual in Trucks, Reducing Paperwork Burden

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has finalized a rule eliminating the requirement for truck drivers to carry a printed operator's manual for their electronic logging device (ELD). The change, effective upon publication in the Federal Register, follows a public comment period in which 18 of 24 comments supported the move. FMCSA cited the availability of digital manuals and lack of safety benefit as justification.
