India Joins WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement to Support Sustainable Fishing
On July 20, 2026, India formally joined the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (AFS), prohibiting government support for illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and overfished stocks. The agreement, effective since September 15, 2025, is the first multilateral WTO pact with an environmental sustainability objective, protecting small-scale fishers and disciplining subsidies for large industrial fleets.
