War’s Over, but Ocean Rates Face Raft of Challenges as Surcharges and Frontloading Surge
Despite the end of US-Iran hostilities and a gradual resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, ocean container rates continue to climb due to emergency fuel surcharges, frontloading ahead of Asia tariff deadlines, and carrier rate increases planned for July. Trans-Pacific West Coast rates surged 19% to over $5,700 per FEU, while East Coast rates hit $7,400 per FEU, according to the Freightos Baltic Index.
