British Heart Foundation to Close 150 Charity Shops Amid Rising Costs

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has announced plans to close 150 of its charity shops, a strategic decision driven by an "exceptionally challenging trading environment." This move represents nearly a quarter of its total retail footprint across the UK, which currently includes 640 shops.

Strategic Retail Restructuring

The BHF's decision to shutter these locations comes after a comprehensive review of its retail operations. The charity cited rising operating costs and evolving consumer behaviors as key factors rendering some stores financially unsustainable. Charmaine Griffiths, Chief Executive of BHF, emphasized the importance of sustaining the retail arm's contribution to funding cardiovascular research.

"Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment," said Griffiths. "We must take the difficult step to close some of our shops to sustain retail's important contribution to funding BHF's groundbreaking research."

Timeline and Impact

  • 90 stores are expected to close by the end of March 2027.
  • The remaining 60 stores will close by March 2028.

The BHF also plans to reduce central support teams for its retail operations, although specific headcount reductions were not disclosed. The charity has committed to informing affected employees before publicly announcing store locations.

Financial Health and Future Plans

Despite these closures, the BHF maintains a healthy financial position, bolstered by strong fundraising and legacy income. The charity will continue to adapt its retail strategy, focusing on online channels such as its website and eBay to align with changing shopping behaviors.

Industry Context

The BHF's decision mirrors similar moves by other charities like Cancer Research UK, which announced plans to close 90 High Street shops by May 2026 and up to 100 more by April 2027. These closures reflect broader trends in the retail sector, where rising costs and digital competition are reshaping the landscape.

Organization Planned Closures Timeline
British Heart Foundation 150 March 2027-2028
Cancer Research UK 190 May 2026-April 2027

The BHF's strategic pivot underscores the challenges faced by traditional retail models in adapting to economic pressures and digital transformation.

Next Milestone: The BHF will release the list of affected store locations once employees have been notified.
