India's consumer price inflation accelerated to 4.45 per cent in July, marking the second consecutive month above the Reserve Bank of India's 4 per cent medium-term target, according to ET Retail. The reading was nearly in line with a Reuters poll of economists, which had estimated inflation at 4.50 per cent.
July Print Signals Persistent Price Pressure
According to the report, the central bank left its benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent last week, as policymakers awaited clearer evidence on whether inflationary pressures had become broad-based in Asia's third-largest economy.
Key data points from the report:
- Headline CPI inflation: 4.45% in July versus a Reuters poll estimate of 4.50%
- Food inflation: 5.52% in July, up from 5.32% in June
- Transport inflation: 4.43% in July, up from 4.31% in June
- Repo rate: 5.25%, unchanged
- RBI inflation forecast for 2026/27: 5.00%, cut by 10 basis points

RBI Rate Stance and Governor's Assessment
At the central bank's monetary policy announcement earlier this month, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said headline inflation has moved above target mainly because of higher fuel prices, while broader price pressures remained in check, according to ET Retail. The report also noted that the bank trimmed its inflation projection for 2026/27 by 10 basis points to 5 per cent at that meeting.
The RBI left its benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25 per cent and cut its 2026/27 inflation forecast by 10 basis points to 5 per cent.
Food Inflation Pressures
India's food inflation climbed to 5.52 per cent in July from 5.32 per cent in June, on the back of weak monsoon showers, the report said. It is expected to soften with a slight recovery in the rains in August, which could mitigate further price pressures from the impact of El Nino.
Fuel Prices and Pass-Through Risk
While crude oil prices were volatile during the month, economists cited by ET Retail said the absence of any meaningful revision in domestic retail fuel prices is expected to limit pass-through to consumers. Transport inflation nonetheless accelerated to 4.43 per cent in July from 4.31 per cent in June.
Outlook for Rates
As the report's headline indicates, the July inflation print is unlikely to alter the RBI's rate outlook. For executives, investors and equity analysts monitoring Asia's third-largest economy, the next data points to track are the August monsoon recovery and domestic fuel-price decisions, both of which the report says will influence whether food and transport price pressures continue to push headline inflation above target.
