Mall retailers across India are witnessing a 15-20% surge in sales as heatwaves and school holidays drive consumers to air-conditioned shopping centers. This trend is significantly boosting revenues for restaurants, fashion, and beauty retailers.
Increased Footfalls and Spending
Saurabh Khanijo, Managing Director of the Kylin chain of restaurants, reports a 15-20% increase in sales at mall outlets compared to last year. Pushpa Bector, Group Executive Director at DLF Retail, notes a 10-11% revenue increase for DLF malls in April and May.
"People are not travelling as much this summer," said Bector. "Because of adverse weather conditions, disposable incomes are going into malls, and per capita spending seems to have gone up."
Dwell-Time Economics
Ravinder Choudhary, Vice President of Vegas & Unity Group, observes longer dwell times in malls. Shriram PM Monga, co-founder of SRED, highlights a 15-25% increase in mall footfalls during peak holiday and high-temperature periods.
| Company | Sales Increase (%) |
|---|---|
| Kylin Restaurants | 15-20 |
| DLF Malls | 10-11 |
| Cafe Delhi Heights | 10 |
Strategic Implications
The shift in consumer behavior underscores the strategic importance of malls as a refuge during extreme weather. Retailers are capitalizing on this trend by enhancing their offerings and customer experience.
Future Outlook
The sales surge is expected to continue through August, with categories such as F&B, beauty, and fashion leading the growth. Retailers are likely to maintain momentum by leveraging the increased foot traffic and spending patterns.
