India’s fiscal year 2027 has started on a strong note, with discretionary spending surging in apparel and white goods, according to a report by Writankar Mukherjee and Aanya Thakur in The Economic Times. Apparel retailers reported sales growth of 12–14% year-over-year, while makers of cooling products like air conditioners saw demand rise 17–18%, as a scorching summer boosted consumption. Last year, by contrast, AC sales volumes had shrunk and refrigerator growth was in single digits. The report credits GST rate cuts and stable apparel prices for supporting the rebound.
Sales Surge Across Categories
Devarajan Iyer, chief executive of department store chain Lifestyle International, described the ongoing quarter’s sales as “extremely strong, registering double-digit growth over last year.” He noted that the recovery in consumption seen in January–March has strengthened further. LG Electronics reported positive momentum across all its categories—ACs, refrigerators, television sets, and washing machines—supported by improving consumer sentiment.
| Category | Reported Growth (YoY) | Source Context |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel | 12–14% | Retailers' aggregate |
| Cooling products (ACs, etc.) | 17–18% | White goods makers |
| Last year AC volume | Shrank | Comparison basis |
| Last year refrigerator | Single-digit growth | Comparison basis |
Strong summer demand has also helped the recovery amid geopolitical tensions from the Iran war and inflation concerns, the report added.
Cautionary Signals on Monsoon and Inflation
Despite the strong start, industry executives are cautious. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal monsoon rains, and June data already showed a deficit of 46%. Weak rainfall could push up food prices, cause rural distress, and hurt consumer sentiment, the report warned.
Inflation has been accelerating: it rose to 3.93% in May from 3.48% in April, driven largely by higher fuel and food prices. Lalit Agarwal, managing director of V-Mart Retail, said sales growth remained healthy at a double-digit pace in the current quarter, but consumption could now face issues depending on rainfall patterns and the inflation trajectory.
A Bank of America report last week cautioned that the “passthrough of elevated wholesale prices, along with emerging El Nino risks, continues to pose some upside risks to the retail inflation outlook in India.” The brokerage also noted that there is no “visible slowdown” in the value commerce market or e-commerce parcel shipments for third-party logistics companies, and it has become “more optimistic” on online travel and quick commerce.
Outlook
For now, demand remains healthy, according to companies and analysts quoted in the report. But the combination of an uneven monsoon, El Nino threat, and persistent inflation means the strong start to FY27 may face headwinds in the months ahead. The next milestone for markets will be the monsoon progress in July and the June inflation data, both of which will provide a clearer picture of consumer spending momentum.
