Voltas sells 1 million AC units in record 81 days, chairman Noel Tata steps down

Voltas, a Tata Group consumer durables company, crossed the milestone of selling 1 million room air conditioning units in a record 81 days in the current financial year, according to Business-Today. Chairman Noel Tata announced the achievement on Tuesday at what was his final annual general meeting (AGM) as chairman, ahead of his mandatory retirement in November. The Indian heatwave drove demand, with the company selling over 22 lakh units in the full FY2026, and March alone recording over 5 lakh units — the strongest single-month sales in the company’s history.

Sales performance and milestone

The record sales pace builds on Voltas' strong momentum. The company’s Chennai facility, described as India’s largest integrated room air conditioner plant, scaled production to meet demand. The previous milestone of 1 million units was achieved over a longer period, making the 81-day sprint a new benchmark.

Metric Value
Units sold in FY2026 22 lakh+
Best month (March) 5 lakh+ units
Days to reach 1 million in FY2026 81 days

Noel Tata noted, “I have great satisfaction that Voltas stands strong today,” as per Business-Today.

VoltBek joint venture performance

VoltBek, the company’s joint venture with Turkey’s Arcelik, also posted strong results. The durables business recorded double-digit volume growth in FY2026, with sales of washing machines, refrigerators and other appliances crossing 33 lakh units. Business-Today reported that VoltBek has compounded at more than 30% annually over five years and now ranks second in the semi-automatic washing machine segment with a 14.5% market share.

Leadership transition

Noel Tata, 69, will step down as chairman in November, following the Tata Group’s retirement age policy for non-executive directors. He joined the Voltas board in January 2003 and was appointed chairman in September 2017, succeeding Ishaat Hussain. He also chaired the AGM of Trent last week, marking his final AGM for that retailer as well.

Future outlook

Noel Tata expressed confidence in Voltas’ leadership bench, saying the “close cooperation of seasoned practitioners and new talent” will help the company continue to take “big strides in all business segments”. With the AC market in India expanding rapidly amid heatwaves and rising disposable incomes, Voltas is well-positioned to leverage its manufacturing capacity and distribution network. The VoltBek JV further diversifies revenue beyond cooling products into home appliances.

Investors will watch for Voltas’ next quarterly earnings report and any updates on Noel Tata’s succession plan. The company’s ability to sustain growth momentum will depend on maintaining supply chain efficiency and brand strength in a competitive market.
