Wabash stock soars as analyst cites management bullishness

Wabash National (NYSE: WNC) shares surged 16.38% on Wednesday after DA Davidson analysts upgraded the stock to buy from neutral, citing management's increasing confidence in a trailer demand recovery by 2027 and a favourable trade ruling against Chinese imports. The stock closed at $10.80, up from $9.32 the prior day, and continued to rise Thursday, trading at $11.24 by midday. The rally lifted the stock to a 52-week gain of approximately 5%, after months of double-digit percentage declines.

Analyst Upgrade and Stock Reaction

DA Davidson analysts Michael Shlisky and Linda Umwali upgraded Wabash to buy from neutral after meeting with company management and investors. They set a price target of $20, more than double the stock's recent low of $7.15 on June 5. Wabash stock had already been trending higher, closing Tuesday at $9.28. The upgrade triggered a 16.38% gain on Wednesday (+$1.52), followed by a further 4.03% rise Thursday to $11.24. The stock is now up 56.7% in the last month and 34.7% in the last three months.

Date Closing Price Daily Change
June 5 (recent bottom) $7.15 -
June 16 (Tuesday) $9.28 -
June 17 (Wednesday) $10.80 +16.38%
June 18 (Thursday est.) $11.24 +4.03%

Trade Ruling as a Tailwind

The upgrade followed a Commerce Department determination that China had "unfairly" subsidized its trailer industries. The department recommended countervailing duties of 82.3% to 128.7% on Chinese trailer imports, with smaller duties on Mexican imports. Wabash management told DA Davidson that the recent rulings "came in better than expected" and "could become a meaningful tailwind." According to the analyst report, the affected market represents 5% to 10% of the U.S. dry van market. If Wabash captures 5% to 10% of that segment, it could add $20 million to EBITDA, on top of the current full-year estimate of $185 million.

Market Fundamentals Strengthening

Beyond the trade ruling, management's confidence is supported by broader freight trends. ACT Research reported preliminary net trailer orders for May of 20,700 units, up from 19,400 in April and a staggering 237% increase year-over-year. DA Davidson wrote: "Wabash expressed increasing confidence that trailer demand can return to replacement levels in 2027, following recent conversations with customers and the exit of some capacity from the freight market." Replacement demand is estimated at 120,000 to 140,000 dry vans per year, while current run rates are near 100,000. Management noted that exiting capacity is "the oldest and least-likely to compete with new units," and Wabash's used-trailer network has not seen any surge in supply. However, the report cautioned: "That said, we got the sense that management is not calling for a sudden market boom. Instead, WNC's view is that fleets have delayed purchases for several years and will eventually need to replace aging equipment."

Outlook and Price Target

DA Davidson's $20 price target implies significant upside from current levels, though the stock remains far below its March 2024 high of ~$30. The upgrade reflects a convergence of regulatory tailwinds, improving freight fundamentals, and a disciplined management outlook. Investors will watch for further order data and quarterly earnings to gauge whether the recovery gains traction, especially as the company navigates the transition from a prolonged downcycle.
