Soybean Prices Steady Amid Regenerative Agri Push in Maharashtra

Soybean prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) for the July contract are currently trading at $14.50 per bushel, showing a week-over-week change of 0.2% and a year-over-year increase of 5%. This stability comes as ADM and TechnoServe announce a new initiative to promote regenerative agriculture among soybean farmers in Maharashtra, India.

Regenerative Agriculture Initiative

ADM, a leading agricultural supply chain manager, has partnered with TechnoServe, an international non-profit, to advance regenerative agriculture practices in Maharashtra. This initiative, part of ADM's 'Farm Forward Initiative', aims to support 15,000 new soybean farmers across the districts of Latur, Dharashiv, Beed, and Nanded.

The program, funded by a $500,000 investment from ADM Cares, will focus on improving soil health and building farmer resilience. Amrendra Mishra, Managing Director of Ag Services and Oilseeds at ADM, emphasized the importance of sustainable supply chains starting with resilient farming communities.

Supply Side Intelligence

The initiative will establish 200 demonstration plots over two cropping seasons to showcase best practices in soil health and water conservation. These efforts are expected to enhance long-term productivity and climate resilience among farmers. Additionally, eight Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) hubs will be established to provide ongoing support.

Demand Side Intelligence

The demand for soybeans remains robust, driven by strong consumption trends in the food and feed industries. The USDA projects a steady increase in soybean demand, particularly in Asia, where soybean meal is a key ingredient in livestock feed.

Price Outlook

Looking ahead, soybean prices are expected to remain stable, supported by strong demand and the positive impact of regenerative agriculture practices on supply. Key upcoming data releases include the USDA's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, which will provide further insights into global supply and demand dynamics.

"At TechnoServe, we believe that lasting agricultural transformation begins with empowering smallholder farmers," said Joydeep Dutt, Country Director-India at TechnoServe.

Why Biofortified Crops Could Shape the Next Phase of Indian Agriculture

According to Prateek Rastogi of Better Nutrition, biofortified crops bred through conventional methods could shift Indian agriculture from calorie security to nutrition security. ICAR has released more than 150 varieties across wheat, rice, pearl millet, sorghum, maize, and mustard, with biofortified wheat containing roughly twice the iron and zinc of conventional wheat.

India's Potato Seed Ecosystem: The Foundation for Future Farming Prosperity

India, the world's second-largest potato producer, suffers from a productivity gap with average yields of 28-30 tonnes per hectare, half of global leaders. A fragmented seed ecosystem and low Seed Replacement Rate (25-30%) are primary causes. Transitioning to an organized seed marketing system with digital intelligence can boost yields, reduce crop failure risks, and align with growing demand from frozen food and QSR sectors.
