India’s hydropower generation plunged more than a fifth in June, according to data from the power ministry, after El Niño-linked dry weather depleted reservoir levels, piling pressure on the grid during the peak summer demand season.
Hydropower Output Plunges
Hydroelectric generation fell almost 21% from a year earlier in June, the steepest drop since February 2024, the power ministry data showed. For the quarter ended June, electricity output from dams declined nearly 7%. In contrast, coal, nuclear, and renewable facilities generated more to meet record demand driven by extreme heat.
Monsoon Deficit and El Niño
Cumulative monsoon rainfall across India was 38% below normal through July 1, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), largely due to the emergence of an El Niño weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean. The monsoon season runs from June to September, and the dry weather constrained hydro generation as well as irrigation during the crucial crop-sowing phase.
Reservoir Levels at Critical Low

Demand Surge and Grid Response
Peak electricity demand in India reached a record 270.8 GW in May and 265.2 GW in June, driven by extreme heat. Outlook for July and Beyond
The levels may improve as monsoon rains advance across more parts of the country, replenishing reservoirs and leading to cooler weather that reduces electricity demand, according to the Bloomberg report. Rainfall has already picked up in recent days, with the overall precipitation deficit now narrowing to 20% below normal. The IMD expects July precipitation to be just below 94% of the long-term average. For commodity traders and energy analysts, this means continued monitoring of reservoir levels and rainfall progression in key hydro regions, as any sustained deficit would keep coal-fired generation elevated, potentially supporting thermal coal demand and prices in the near term.
