Hanwha establishes Hanwha Horizon USA to build US LNG trading and logistics arm

The South Korean conglomerate Hanwha is deepening its position in the US LNG value chain with the creation of a new American company that will combine procurement, trading and logistics with its expanding shipping and shipbuilding businesses, according to Splash247. Hanwha Aerospace announced the establishment of Hanwha Horizon USA on 25 August 2026, describing it as the "control tower" for the group's global LNG operations.

A maritime-led control tower

James Sagar, CEO of Hanwha Shipping, will also head Hanwha Horizon USA, underlining the maritime component of the strategy, Splash247 reported. Hanwha said Horizon will handle everything from LNG sourcing and trading to optimising transport logistics.

"The launch of Hanwha Horizon USA is a turning point that connects our global LNG procurement capabilities with our shipbuilding and maritime businesses," Sagar said.

Initial mission: supply the Yeosu power plant

Initially, the new business will secure LNG for Hanwha Energy's Yeosu power plant in South Korea, which is scheduled to start commercial operations in 2029, according to Splash247. The company then intends to sell LNG to other utilities and energy companies and expand trading throughout Asia and other international markets, the report added.

Hanwha has already signed an LNG purchase agreement with US producer Venture Global and is working with Korea Southern Power on diversifying Korean LNG procurement, Splash247 reported.

Shipbuilding and shipping integration

Splash247 noted that Hanwha is assembling capabilities across virtually the entire LNG maritime chain. Hanwha Ocean is one of the world's leading LNG carrier builders, while Hanwha Shipping is developing its own fleet. Last year, the group ordered an LNG carrier, plus an option, at Hanwha Philly Shipyard — marking the first US order for an export-market LNG carrier since the late 1970s, according to the report.

The group subsequently expanded the programme with additional LNG carrier and MR tanker orders, using a joint construction model involving Hanwha Ocean and its Philadelphia yard, Splash247 reported.

Entity Function in the LNG chain Key detail

Hanwha Shipping Fleet development and maritime strategy CEO James Sagar also leads Horizon USA
Hanwha Energy LNG consumer Yeosu power plant, commercial operations from 2029

Hanwha Philly Shipyard US shipbuilding First US export-market LNG carrier order since late 1970s
Venture Global US LNG producer LNG purchase agreement signed
Korea Southern Power Korean utility partner Joint effort to diversify Korean LNG procurement

Implications for LNG traders and procurement teams

For commodity traders and LNG procurement analysts, Hanwha Horizon USA represents the entry of a Korean-controlled entity into US LNG origination, trading and logistics, with Splash247 reporting that it will initially secure volumes for captive use at the Yeosu plant before turning to third-party utility sales across Asia. The combination of a trading desk with an in-house LNG carrier fleet and US shipbuilding capacity gives the platform a vertically integrated structure that spans upstream purchase agreements with Venture Global through to shipping and downstream supply.

Splash247's report highlighted that Hanwha already holds the building blocks of this strategy: Hanwha Ocean's leading position in LNG carrier construction, Hanwha Shipping's developing fleet and the Philadelphia yard's newly established role in export-market LNG carrier orders. With the Yeosu plant start-up set for 2029 and Asian LNG trading expansion planned, Hanwha Horizon USA will be a name for LNG desks to watch, according to the report.
