Renewable natural gas (RNG) has crossed a critical threshold in the commercial trucking market, driven by a convergence of proven engine technology, stable pricing, and a fueling network now capable of supporting large-scale deployment, according to Clean Energy's senior vice president of sales Chad Lindholm.
Appearing on FreightWaves' What the Truck with host Malcolm Harris, Lindholm said the math for RNG has changed not due to regulatory pressure alone but because of genuine product breakthroughs. "We've been around for decades and have cut our teeth in the refuse sector, the transit sector, airports, and in the early days in trucking," Lindholm said. "Through the trials and tribulations of early engine technology, we've got to a point now where we've got an engine that works and works really well, and that's important."
The Engine That Changed the Conversation
At the center of this shift is the Cummins X15N, a 15-liter natural gas engine producing up to 450 horsepower and 1,850 pound-feet of torque. Lindholm described it as the product most responsible for altering fleet executives' perceptions. The X15N is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) product — not a conversion or repower — built at Cummins' plant in Jamestown, New York. Tens of thousands of units are already operating in Asia, with a growing installed base on U.S. roads. "We're not talking about a startup company," Lindholm emphasized.
OEM Backing and Vertical Integration
Fleet operators have historically hesitated to adopt alternative fuel engines due to concerns about warranty and support. The X15N addresses this through direct integration with major OEMs. Clean Energy's commercial ecosystem now includes PACCAR (through Peterbilt and Kenworth) and Daimler (through Freightliner), creating vertical alignment from engine platform to chassis to end-user delivery. This trusted supply chain removes a persistent objection to alternative fuel adoption.
Performance and Range Data
According to Lindholm, over 1,000 RNG trucks are already on the road, with demo units reaching dozens of the largest for-hire and private carriers. Fleet feedback indicates comparable performance to diesel, including the ability to pull 80,000+ pounds on varied topography. In Canada, some applications are handling up to 140,000 pounds without loss of performance.

Range, previously seen as a disqualifying factor, is no longer a conversation-stopper. The X15N covers a substantial share of domestic over-the-road and regional trucking operations, with fleets reporting the ability to exceed 1,000 miles depending on fuel capacity.
Infrastructure and Economics Mature
Clean Energy has built out a fueling network that supports serious commercial deployment, moving beyond niche refuse and transit applications. Lindholm attributed the inflection point to a combination of engine reliability, price stability relative to diesel, and infrastructure that now allows fleets to operate with confidence. While specific price comparisons were not detailed, Lindholm noted that the overall economics have shifted in RNG's favor.
Outlook for RNG Adoption
With over 1,000 trucks in operation, a proven OEM engine, and backing from major truck manufacturers, the path for RNG into mainstream trucking is now established. Lindholm expects continued fleet conversions as operators gain firsthand experience with the X15N's performance. Commodity traders and energy analysts should monitor RNG production capacity, feedstock availability, and the pace of fleet adoption as key demand indicators for the renewable natural gas market.
