India Seeks Preferential Access Through US Trade Deal as 50% Tariff Hampers Progress, Minister Says

India's trade minister, Piyush Goyal, stated on Monday that the country seeks preferential access through a trade pact with the United States, according to a Reuters report via the Economic Times. Speaking at a media conclave in New Delhi, Goyal disclosed that the deal is facing delays, with the primary hurdle being the existing 50% tariff imposed on Indian goods.

Tariff Hurdle

The minister identified the 50% tariff on Indian exports to the US as the main obstacle to finalising the trade agreement. This tariff rate, applied to certain Indian products, has slowed negotiations and prevented a swift conclusion, Goyal explained. The Economic Times report, which carried a Reuters dispatch, did not specify which products are subject to the 50% duty or the current average tariff levels on Indian goods.

India's Objective: Preferential Market Access

Goyal emphasized that India's primary goal in the negotiations is to obtain preferential market access for its goods. This objective is central to the country's economic strategy, as it would reduce trade barriers and boost exports to the United States. The minister's remarks highlight New Delhi's desire to secure terms that are more favourable than those under World Trade Organization (WTO) most-favoured-nation rules. The Economic Times report did not provide details on the specific concessions India is seeking.

Official Statement Context

“When world is facing uncertainty, India is busy building bridges of trade,” said Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, as quoted in the image caption accompanying the Economic Times story. The statement underscores India's proactive stance in negotiating bilateral trade agreements amid global economic turbulence.
