Bin Sulayem Takes Interim Control at MMC Ports After CEO's Abrupt Departure

MMC Port Holdings has appointed former DP World chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem as interim leader after the departure of group CEO Azman Shah Mohd Yusof. Bin Sulayem will handle all CEO matters until a permanent successor is named, while day-to-day operations continue without disruption. The leadership change follows bin Sulayem's resignation from DP World in February after the US Department of Justice released emails with Jeffrey Epstein. MMC Ports, Malaysia's largest port operator, has also postponed its planned IPO.

Bin Sulayem Takes Interim Control at MMC Ports After CEO's Abrupt Departure

Malaysia’s largest port operator, MMC Port Holdings, has placed former DP World chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem in interim control following the immediate departure of group CEO Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, according to an internal company memo seen by Reuters.

Leadership Transition at MMC Ports

The memo, obtained by Reuters, states that all matters previously handled by the group CEO will now be referred directly to bin Sulayem’s office until a permanent successor is appointed. The temporary reporting structure is intended to ensure continuity in leadership, governance and decision-making, while strategic projects and day-to-day operations continue without disruption, according to the memo. No reason has been given for Azman Shah’s departure, and neither MMC Ports nor bin Sulayem has commented publicly.

Bin Sulayem’s Controversial Background

Bin Sulayem became executive chairman of MMC Ports after leaving DP World in February. His resignation from the Dubai-based ports giant took effect immediately after the US Department of Justice released documents containing previously redacted email exchanges between him and the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Bin Sulayem has not publicly commented on the emails. DP World subsequently appointed Essa Kazim as chairman and Yuvraj Narayan as group CEO.

Impact on Operations and IPO Plans

MMC Ports is Malaysia’s largest port operator, controlling a portfolio of major gateways along the Strait of Malacca as well as cruise terminals. The group has also been working towards a stock market listing that had been expected to become Malaysia’s biggest initial public offering in more than a decade. That process was postponed last year after the company spent around 18 months trying to secure an acceptable valuation from investors.

What This Means for Shippers and Carriers

For shippers, freight forwarders, and ocean carriers using MMC Ports’ terminals, the leadership change is unlikely to cause immediate operational disruption. The internal memo explicitly states that day-to-day operations and strategic projects will continue without interruption. However, the abrupt departure of the group CEO and the interim appointment of a figure with a controversial recent history could create uncertainty around long-term strategic direction, including the timing and structure of the delayed IPO. Stakeholders should monitor the search for a permanent CEO and any updates on the listing plans.
