JSW, SAIC weigh capital infusion to lift MG Motor India output to 1 million units

JSW Group and China’s SAIC are discussing an additional capital infusion into MG Motor India that would eventually scale the company’s Halol plant capacity to 1 million vehicles annually from the current 220,000, according to Business-Today.

Capital infusion talks

Business-Today reported that the joint venture is currently owned 35% by JSW and 49% by SAIC. The companies are deploying Rs 3,500 crore in localisation and new products, and the venture is expected to become profitable in CY27. The report quoted Parth Jindal, director of JSW MG Motor, as declining to say whether the additional funding by shareholders would alter their stakes.

Halol capacity expansion

The Halol plant currently produces 220,000 vehicles a year. The proposed expansion would take that to 1 million units annually, a more than fourfold increase. Business-Today said the additional capital is intended to "eventually scale" the plant, without providing a target completion date.

Metric Current Target
Annual vehicle capacity 220,000 1,000,000

Tomahawk EV and PHEV debut

Ahead of the JSW-badged EV launch around Diwali, JSW MG Motor India has launched the Hector Tomahawk as an EV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), with the PHEV positioned as India’s first in its segment, according to Business-Today.

  • Seven-seat Tomahawk PHEV: combined range over 1,100 km; price Rs 21.8 lakh plus Rs 3.2/km under battery-as-a-service (BaaS).
  • Tomahawk EV (five and seven seats): claimed 517-km range; price Rs 14 lakh plus Rs 4.9/km under BaaS.
  • Full-ownership pricing: Rs 25.7 lakh for the PHEV and Rs 19.5 lakh for the EV.

"With this launch we should be coming close if not overtaking the market leader in new energy vehicles," said Parth Jindal, director JSW MG Motor.

Localisation and platform roadmap

The Tomahawk is the first MG SUV on the multi-powertrain ADAPT platform, Business-Today reported. It will anchor the C-SUV strategy for seven to eight years, while the Windsor anchors the SUV-B category. Both models are targeted to reach 70% localisation by 2027, with localisation rising 2-3 percentage points monthly.

Jindal said the ADAPT platform can support extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology, which uses an onboard generator to produce electricity. He expects EREV to gain traction in India following China and Europe, according to the report.

Production timeline

Business-Today did not specify a timeline for the Halol capacity expansion or the completion of the capital infusion. The venture is expected to become profitable in CY27, and the Tomahawk launch has already taken place ahead of the Diwali period, the report said.
