Potensic Atom 3 drone launch underscores US import ban on all foreign-made drones

Potensic, a Chinese drone manufacturer, launched the Atom 3 with improved sensors, battery, and transmission range. However, a US ban on all foreign-made drones prevents its sale in the United States, mirroring restrictions faced by DJI. The ban impacts trade flows for consumer drone imports.

Potensic Atom 3 drone launch underscores US import ban on all foreign-made drones

The Potensic Atom 3, a feature-packed beginner drone and direct competitor to DJI's models, has been unveiled but remains blocked from the US market due to a federal ban on all foreign-made drones, according to TechRadar. The restriction, which applies to any drone manufactured outside the United States, hits Chinese companies like Potensic and DJI equally, preventing import and sale in the US.

Product Upgrades and Pricing

The Atom 3 replaces the Atom 2 with several key upgrades. It features a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K video recording at up to 60 fps with a Log color profile, 50 MP photos in JPEG and RAW, and 7x slow motion in Full HD, TechRadar reported. Battery life reaches 40 minutes on a single charge, and transmission range extends to 16 km. The drone also includes AI Tracking 2.0, capable of operating at altitudes as low as 4 meters and recognizing hikers and vehicles.

Pricing for the standard kit (no controller) is $429.99 / £319.99, while the bundle with the new RC PTD 2 controller costs $549.99 / £429.99, available for pre-order at Amazon and the Potensic store, according to TechRadar. The Fly More bundle includes three batteries and a charging hub, plus an upgraded controller with a 5.5-inch Full HD display rated at 900 nits.

Feature Atom 3 Specification
Sensor size 1/1.3-inch
Max video 4K at 60 fps (Log color profile)
Still photos 50 MP (JPEG & RAW)
Slow motion 7x in Full HD
Battery life Up to 40 minutes
Transmission range 16 km
AI tracking AI Tracking 2.0 (down to 4 m altitude)
Controller (bundle) 5.5-inch Full HD display, 900 nits brightness

US Ban on Foreign-Made Drones

TechRadar reported that the US currently has a ban on all foreign-made drones, not just those from DJI. Since Potensic is based in China, it faces the same barrier to entry as DJI. The article noted that US pricing for the Atom 3 is positive for consumers, but it is unknown if or when the drone will land in the US. "For now, the Atom 3 looks like another feature-packed and affordable drone for aerial photography that drone fans in the US could miss out on," TechRadar stated.

Trade Implications for Importers and Exporters

The ban effectively closes the US market to Chinese-manufactured consumer drones, disrupting import flows from China. US importers and customs brokers must adhere to restrictions that apply to all foreign-made drones, not only specific brands. This creates uncertainty for logistics executives managing inventory of Chinese drone components or finished products. Exporters in China lose a key consumer market, potentially shifting sales to Europe, Asia, and other regions where the Atom 3 is available. TechRadar indicated that pre-orders are live in markets like the UK (Amazon and Potensic store) but did not specify Australia pricing.

For trade policy analysts, the blanket foreign-made drone ban represents a non-tariff barrier with significant impact on a single product category. The restriction does not differentiate based on security assessment of individual models, affecting all Chinese drone makers equally. This could lead to trade diversion, with companies stockpiling inventory in warehouses outside the US or rerouting exports to alternative markets.

What to Watch

The next key milestone is whether the US government introduces any waiver or product-specific review process for drones that meet certain data-security standards. Without such changes, the Atom 3 and similar foreign-made drones will remain inaccessible to US consumers, reinforcing market dominance of any US-manufactured alternatives.
