ICAR-IISR Signs Spice Technology Licensing Deals on 51st Foundation Day

ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) marked its 51st foundation day by signing technology licensing agreements for improved spice varieties and value-added products with the State Kudumbashree Mission and Gramin Multi State Agro Cooperative Society Limited, targeting wider adoption among spice growers and food processors.

ICAR-IISR Signs Spice Technology Licensing Deals on 51st Foundation Day

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR-IISR), Kozhikode, celebrated its 51st Foundation Day with the theme “Spices for Progress and Prosperity,” signing multiple technology licensing agreements designed to bring improved spice varieties and value-added processing technologies to farmers and food manufacturers, according to a report by The Hindu BusinessLine.

Technology Transfer to Farmer Cooperatives and Mission Groups

The institute signed licensing agreements with two partner organisations to promote broader adoption of its developed technologies. The State Kudumbashree Mission, Thiruvananthapuram, received licenses for several improved spice varieties as well as four value-added technologies. A separate agreement with Gramin Multi State Agro Cooperative Society Limited, Perambra, focused on multiplication and dissemination of the IISR Chandra black pepper variety among spice growers.

R Dinesh, Director of IISR, presented the licenses to Shanavas, State Programme Officer of Kudumbashree Mission.

Expanded Spice Varieties Portfolio

The licensed improved spice varieties include:

Turmeric IISR Prathibha, IISR Alleppey Supreme
Ginger IISR Vajra
Cardamom IISR Manushree
Cinnamon IISR Nithyashree

These varieties were developed through IISR's research programme aimed at higher yield, disease resistance, and climate resilience, as highlighted by Director R Dinesh in his address outlining future research priorities.

Value-Added Technologies for Food Processing

Beyond raw spice varieties, the licensing agreement with Kudumbashree Mission covered four value-added technologies developed by IISR that are directly relevant to the food processing industry:

  • A spice concoction and its preparation process
  • A jaggery-based value-added product
  • A spice mix for use in milk and milk products
  • Nutmeg rind-based value-added products

These technologies offer manufacturing enterprises ready-to-commercialise formulations for the growing market of spice-based convenience foods, dairy additives, and natural flavourings.

Good Agricultural Practices Publications

During the programme, IISR released four Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) publications on turmeric, cardamom, black pepper, and ginger. These guidelines are intended to help growers and processors achieve consistent quality and traceability, which are increasingly demanded by international buyers and domestic food safety regulators.

Integration of Emerging Technologies

Jayaraj U Kidav, Executive Director of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Calicut, underscored the need to integrate emerging technologies with agriculture to improve productivity and sustainability. While no specific automation or digital tools were named in the agreements, the emphasis on technology linkage signals potential future collaboration between electronics IT institutes and spice research for sensor-based quality monitoring, precision farming, and supply chain digitisation.

Production Timeline and Industry Impact

The licensing agreements were signed on July 2, 2026, during the foundation day event. The Kudumbashree Mission and Gramin Cooperative will now begin multiplication and distribution of the licensed varieties and technologies. For food processors, the availability of improved spice varieties with higher oleoresin content (typical of IISR lines) and validated value-added processes can shorten R&D cycles for new product development.

The agreements do not specify a production start date or investment figures, but the licensing model allows rapid scaling through existing cooperative networks. Food manufacturing companies sourcing spices for masala blends, extracts, and ready-to-eat meals may see improved raw material consistency as these improved varieties reach commercial volumes through partner organisations.

As the institute focuses future research on climate-resilient spice production, value addition, and technology outreach according to Director R Dinesh, the manufacturing sector can expect a pipeline of new spice-based inputs and process technologies designed for industrial application.
