The ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR-IISR), Kozhikode, celebrated its 51st Foundation Day with the theme “Spices for Progress and Prosperity,” signing multiple technology licensing agreements designed to bring improved spice varieties and value-added processing technologies to farmers and food manufacturers, according to a report by The Hindu BusinessLine.
Technology Transfer to Farmer Cooperatives and Mission Groups
The institute signed licensing agreements with two partner organisations to promote broader adoption of its developed technologies. The State Kudumbashree Mission, Thiruvananthapuram, received licenses for several improved spice varieties as well as four value-added technologies. A separate agreement with Gramin Multi State Agro Cooperative Society Limited, Perambra, focused on multiplication and dissemination of the IISR Chandra black pepper variety among spice growers.

During the programme, IISR released four Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) publications on turmeric, cardamom, black pepper, and ginger. These guidelines are intended to help growers and processors achieve consistent quality and traceability, which are increasingly demanded by international buyers and domestic food safety regulators.
Integration of Emerging Technologies
Jayaraj U Kidav, Executive Director of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Calicut, underscored the need to integrate emerging technologies with agriculture to improve productivity and sustainability. The Kudumbashree Mission and Gramin Cooperative will now begin multiplication and distribution of the licensed varieties and technologies. For food processors, the availability of improved spice varieties with higher oleoresin content (typical of IISR lines) and validated value-added processes can shorten R&D cycles for new product development.
