WIRED Review Finds Most PCs Can't Handle Samsung's 6K Gaming Monitor

WIRED Review Finds Most PCs Can't Handle Samsung's 6K Gaming Monitor

According to WIRED's review of Samsung's new 32-inch Odyssey G8 G80HS, 6K resolution delivers what the outlet called "mind-bending sharpness," making fine objects like power lines and chain-link fences render without blocky, jagged aliasing. But the same review concludes that PCs are not yet ready for 6K gaming: the monitor packs 21,233,664 pixels — roughly 155 percent more than a typical 4K display — and most systems lack the graphics horsepower, ports, and software support to drive it.

The 6K Resolution Leap

WIRED reviewer Matthew S. Smith described 6K as the new 4K. The G80HS has a resolution of 6144 x 3456, which the review notes slightly undersells the monitor's advantage because a 4K monitor is actually 3840 x 2160 and does not offer 4,000 pixels across either axis. The total pixel count is 21,233,664, a roughly 155 percent increase over a typical 4K display and an incredible 10X increase over 1080p.

The sharpness payoff is immediate: the Windows desktop, games, and high-quality photos all look sharper. The only content that won't see much improvement is video, because very few video sources exceed 4K resolution, according to WIRED.

Hardware Requirements and Bottlenecks

Modern PCs will generally output 6K without an issue, WIRED reported, though anyone on a system more than five years old should double-check available video outputs. Hitting 6K at the G80HS's 165-Hz refresh rate is a different story: the monitor requires a DisplayPort 2.1 or an HDMI 2.1 output. These ports are not rare on new PC hardware, but may be missing on systems more than a few years old.

Rendering a 3D game at 6K is far more demanding than a 2D application. WIRED's reviewer tested the display with a gaming desktop equipped with a recently released AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card and found it could not handle demanding titles at a playable frame rate and acceptable detail settings. Even the mighty Nvidia RTX 5090 will struggle if you're playing path-traced games like Alan Wake 2 or Halo Campaign Evolved, the review stated.

Software Compatibility and Compromises

To achieve playable frame rates, users can play games at a lower resolution such as 4K, and modern image upscaling can make up some of the difference. But if you have to play at 4K or lower, WIRED noted, you've lost the 6K monitor's greatest strength.

Older games present separate problems. Titles more than a decade old often have a user interface that targets a lower resolution. Sometimes the UI cannot scale up, resulting in tiny icons and text. In other cases the UI can scale up, but the art assets remain at a lower resolution, leading to a fuzzy and muddy look.

Display Trade-offs

The G80HS's strengths are offset by compromises, according to WIRED's "TIRED" list: a mediocre contrast ratio, no USB-C, and build quality that doesn't fit the price tag. The review also includes a section titled "LCD in an OLED World," addressing the monitor's LCD panel.

WIRED's review concluded that PCs aren't quite ready for 6K gaming.

For technology decision-makers, the review is a benchmark for what a 6K rollout demands: matching investment in GPU performance, port infrastructure, and software testing. The gap between panel capability and ecosystem readiness is the central finding of WIRED's hands-on assessment.
