The 1440p Trade-off
The AW2726DM uses a 27-inch QD-OLED panel with 2560 x 1440 resolution, or 1440p, according to WIRED. That yields about 110 pixels per inch, compared with roughly 165 ppi on a standard 27-inch 4K monitor. WIRED found the review unit "just isn't a sharp display" and is not great for viewing small text. The QD-OLED pixel layout differs from LCD and can produce "color fringing" — an odd burst of green or purple filling the negative space between letters.
Sticking to 1440p "feels like the right call for a monitor at this price point," WIRED reported. Increasing a game's render resolution from 1440p to 4K carries a huge performance penalty, and midrange GPUs struggle with demanding games at 4K. For buyers, the lower resolution is a deliberate choice that preserves gaming performance on less powerful hardware.
Color and Contrast: QD-OLED's Strengths
WIRED emphasised that all QD-OLED panels deliver incredible contrast and superb color performance. OLED pixels are self-emissive — the pixels themselves create light — unlike an LCD panel, which requires a backlight shining through the pixels. That difference gives more control over how the image is lit, producing far more contrast and depth than LCD. Samsung's QD-OLED also uses quantum dots, which generally provide excellent color. The AW2726DM reaches 98 percent of DCI-P3 and 94 percent of AdobeRGB — figures WIRED called close to the top of what is available from any monitor in 2026, regardless of price. In real-world use, WIRED reported, the contrast and color translate to a vivid, realistic image with a sense of depth not found in LCD alternatives.
The Brightness Sacrifice
The major sacrifice at this price, WIRED found, is brightness. Alienware lists the AW2726DM's maximum brightness at 200 nits; the review sample came in just above at 202 nits sustained maximum SDR brightness. By comparison, a more expensive OLED monitor such as the MSI MPG 271QR X50 can deliver 300 nits or more. WIRED's reviewer mostly used the monitor at about 60 percent brightness in a room without much direct sunlight, but had to raise it to 100 percent in peak afternoon sun with curtains open.
Low SDR brightness also constrains HDR. The AW2726DM supports HDR but is not VESA HDR-certified and promises only 400 nits of peak HDR brightness. In testing, HDR brightness was no higher than SDR when the entire display was lit; the maximum recorded was 398 nits when just 10 percent of the display was lit. Leading OLED monitors, WIRED noted, can deliver over 300 nits full-screen and over 1,000 nits in the 10 percent window. The AW2726DM can appear brighter in HDR than in SDR, but gamers with many HDR titles will find it underwhelming.
