According to WIRED, the right charger depends heavily on your priorities: whether you need to top off from zero to 100 percent quickly, charge overnight at home, or stay powered in a hotel. WIRED Reviews staffers constantly test Android chargers, and the guide below compiles their top recommendations for every situation.

The USB-C Power Delivery Baseline

WIRED reported that the era of proprietary ports is largely over. There was once a time when different phones required different cords, like Lightning cables for iPhone or Micro-USB for Android, but now the majority of devices use a USB-C cable. Modern smartphones from Apple, Google, and Samsung use the Power Delivery (PD) charging standard, a fast-charging protocol for USB-C that supports higher voltage and wattage to charge phones faster. All chargers in WIRED's list support USB-C PD and will work with any smartphone ecosystem, including iPhone. For enterprises standardising on one charger type across mixed device fleets, that common standard simplifies procurement and spare-part inventory.

Modern smartphones from Apple, Google, and Samsung use the Power Delivery charging standard, a fast-charging protocol for USB-C.

WIRED's Top Charger Picks

WIRED highlighted four hardware options for different use cases:

  • 45-watt USB-C wall charger — Reaches up to 45 watts, which WIRED says will top off the vast majority of Android smartphones as quickly as possible. It has foldable prongs and an included 6-foot USB-C cable, which WIRED notes is a rarity these days. A newer version of this charger is available with no cable and a built-in display, but WIRED has not tested it yet.
  • 25,000-mAh power bank — This model is overkill for most smartphones, but its massive capacity can easily top off a laptop and tablet, as well as a phone multiple times. It includes a built-in display and cables, and can charge four devices simultaneously.
  • Qi2 power bank — Works similarly to MagSafe, except with Android. Not all Android phones are Qi2-compatible, but most will work; they might just charge a little slower than the base 15 watts. The unit has a kickstand, a built-in display, a two-way USB-C port, and several color options.
  • USB-C charging cable — WIRED's favorite cable is 6 feet long and durable, offering charging up to 240 watts. It is made of recycled plastic, has ribbed cuffs that are easy to grip, and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Maximum Charging Speeds by Handset Model

WIRED warned that charging speeds depend on the equipment you use; if the cable or wireless charger cannot handle these speeds, your experience may vary. The same goes for phone usage — charging while the phone is in use, or while it is hot, can slow speeds. The maximum charging speeds WIRED lists for recent flagship and mid-range models:

According to WIRED, some Android phones can handle speeds of 60 or even 100 watts, but unless the device specifically supports that, a 45-watt charger should deliver everything you need.

Wattage Minimums and Battery Health

For teams that do not need maximum speed, WIRED noted that a 15-watt charger is the bare minimum recommended. That level will charge a phone in a couple of hours, which WIRED says is actually better for long-term battery health and is perfect for overnight charging or while staff are on a break. For maximum speed, WIRED says to pick a higher-wattage charger, but cautioned that top charging speeds depend heavily on which phone model is being charged — a factor procurement leaders should match against their device registry.
