Assam's Tezpur Litchi Makes Debut in Dubai Market

Assam's renowned GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi has reached Dubai in its first export shipment, marking a significant milestone for the region's agricultural exports. The consignment, weighing one metric tonne, underscores the increasing global recognition of India's premium agricultural products.

Export Details

The shipment was ceremonially flagged off in the presence of several dignitaries, including Prithiraj Rabha, Member of Legislative Assembly, Tezpur, and Aruna Rajoria, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Assam. The event also saw participation from Abhishek Dev, Chairman of APEDA, and Ananda Kumar Das, District Commissioner, Sonitpur. The export was facilitated by M/s DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd.

Economic Impact

The export initiative has resulted in improved returns for farmers, with growers receiving nearly 10% higher prices compared to domestic market rates. This development is expected to encourage greater participation in export-oriented value chains, thereby enhancing incomes and promoting sustainable livelihoods for litchi growers.

Market Potential

The successful export of Tezpur Litchi to Dubai is anticipated to pave the way for larger export volumes in the future. This initiative reflects APEDA's ongoing efforts to promote agricultural exports from India's North Eastern Region, connecting local farmers with international markets.

Product Characteristics

Tezpur Litchi is celebrated for its exceptional sweetness, bright-red appearance, and distinctive aroma. The region cultivates several notable varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji, and Sahi, each appreciated for its unique flavor and quality characteristics.

The Geographical Indication (GI) status has strengthened the identity and market recognition of Tezpur Litchi, enhancing its appeal among international buyers and creating new opportunities for premium agricultural exports from Assam.

Future Prospects

The export of Tezpur Litchi to Dubai not only highlights the immense potential of Assam's agricultural products but also sets a precedent for future exports. As global markets continue to recognize the value of GI-tagged products, Assam's farmers stand to benefit from increased demand and better pricing.
