Former England goalkeeper David James has thrown his weight behind two community-interest charities in Peterborough that aim to make football kit cheaper and more sustainable. Speaking at a FIFA World Cup 2026 celebration in the city centre, James stressed that "football is a very expensive game now and times are tough for a lot of people," according to a BBC report.
Background on Goal2Grow
Goal2Grow was founded in May last year by Peterborough-based community interest company Up The Garden Bath. It helped organise the World Cup event with support from Peterborough City Council and Utilita Energy. James became a project ambassador for Goal2Grow in March this year. Kez Hayes Palmer, from Up The Garden Bath, said: "This is about more than football. This is about community, creativity, sustainability, and showing what is possible when people come together with heart and purpose."
Football Rebooted: Reusing Pre-Worn Boots
James also promoted Football Rebooted, a project he helped set up in 2021. It provides families facing financial difficulties with access to pre-worn football boots. James said he, his friends, and family have donated many boots. "What we've realised is first of all on the environmental level, that a lot of football boots get put into landfill, which we need to avoid, and secondly, these boots are reusable," he stated. He added that there are now "800 boxes or donation spots we have now in the country."
Cost Barrier to Playing Football
James, who represented England at the World Cup and played for clubs including Liverpool, Portsmouth, Watford, Manchester City, and West Ham, emphasised the prohibitive cost of the sport: "There are people who want to play football for fun, social, mental and physical benefits who can't access football because of the prohibitive cost." He noted that his World Cup experience helps him "promote football boots as well."
Environmental and Social Impact
| Initiative | Focus | Year Started | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal2Grow | Community, sustainability, football access | 2025 (May) | Local (Peterborough), with ambassador David James |
| Football Rebooted | Reusing pre-worn boots to reduce landfill and support low-income families | 2021 | 800 donation spots nationwide |
The environmental message is central: keeping boots out of landfill while lowering the financial barrier to entry. James, who lives near Peterborough and works as a football pundit, joined the community event to spread awareness.
What to Watch
Growth of the donation network beyond 800 spots and potential expansion of Football Rebooted into other sports or regions could further reduce waste and improve access. No trade or tariff data is involved in this purely domestic charitable effort.
