Little Stars, a Shropshire-based charity providing school uniforms to families in need, has announced a week-long fundraising initiative scheduled for 22-28 June. The charity, founded by Leanne Farlie in 2020, aims to offset the financial burden on local families as the average cost of a secondary school uniform reaches approximately £289, not including shoes, according to Farlie. She described this as "quite an astronomical cost for a lot of families."
The initiative, called Wear Stars 4 Little Stars Week, encourages participants to wear clothing featuring stars, share photos on social media, and make a donation to the charity. Last year, Farlie noted, 12 businesses and schools took part, and she hopes to expand participation this year.
Origins and Evolution
Farlie started Little Stars during her maternity leave, initially seeking to pass on baby clothes to those who needed them most. In a statement on the charity's website, she explained: "Having grown up in the deprived area of Harlescott, I personally experienced financial hardship and witnessed the challenges local families faced. I knew, without a doubt, that our community would benefit immensely from such a service."
The operation has since expanded significantly. Last year, Little Stars moved into its own premises in Shrewsbury—a development Farlie described as a "game changer," driven by growing demand. In 2023, it launched the Cool for School Campaign, which has supplied more than 900 children across Shropshire with essential uniform items.
Funding Gaps and Seasonal Demand
Despite the support received, Farlie emphasized that donations remain insufficient. She noted that items like white polo shirts are rarely donated, requiring the charity to purchase them with dedicated funding. The weeks leading up to the summer holidays are particularly busy, as families face sudden expenses from children's growth spurts. "It is the time when families see the increase in cost because all of a sudden their son's had a growth spurt or their daughter's had a growth spurt," Farlie said. For families on tight budgets, the extra cost can become a real struggle.
Impact and Outlook
Farlie described the community's response as "heartwarming and overwhelming." Looking ahead, the charity's immediate milestone is the success of the Wear Stars 4 Little Stars Week, which will test its ability to scale fundraising through community and business engagement.
