India Inc is experiencing a notable shift as more women executives join the elite million-dollar compensation club. This trend underscores a strategic focus on diversity and professional talent within the corporate landscape.
Rising Representation
According to a study by EMA Partners, nine women leaders are now part of the million-dollar club, up from seven two years ago. This increase is predominantly seen in domestic companies, with the pharmaceuticals and consumer sectors leading the charge. The study analyzed BSE 200 companies, considering an annual compensation of $1 million plus as the threshold.
- Nilima Prasad Divi, promoter of Divi's Labs, topped the list of top-paid women executives.
- Hina Nagarajan, MD & CEO of United Spirits, and Vinita Gupta, CEO of Lupin, followed closely.
Structural Shift
Gopinadhan KG, senior partner at EMA Partners, highlighted that this uptick reflects a structural shift where diversity is becoming a business imperative. This is particularly evident in sectors like financial services and pharma/life sciences, which have historically fostered stronger female leadership pipelines.
"The uptick in the number of million-dollar women CXOs in India reflects a structural shift where diversity is being embedded as a business imperative," said Gopinadhan KG.
Domestic vs. MNCs
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairperson of Biocon, noted that domestic firms are increasingly performance-driven, recognizing women leaders more than MNC subsidiaries. This shift is part of a broader strategy where companies place a higher premium on professional talent and merit-driven leadership.
| Executive Name | Company | Compensation (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Nilima Prasad Divi | Divi's Labs | Over 1 million |
| Hina Nagarajan | United Spirits | Over 1 million |
| Vinita Gupta | Lupin | Over 1 million |
Future Outlook
The trend of women entering the million-dollar club is expected to continue, with financial services and consumer-facing sectors leading the way. However, the concentration remains among larger companies and select sectors.
The next milestone in this evolving landscape will be the upcoming earnings reports, which may further highlight the impact of these leadership changes.
