Hindustan Zinc raises green energy share to 22%, targets 70% by FY28

Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL) has raised the share of green energy in its overall power consumption to 22 per cent, up from approximately 18 per cent in FY2025-26, according to PTI. The Vedanta group firm, which announced the update on Tuesday, said it is progressing towards meeting approximately 70 per cent of its overall power requirements through renewable energy by FY2027-28, as disclosed in a regulatory filing to the BSE.

Green energy share climbs from 18% to 22%

The share of green energy in Hindustan Zinc's current total power consumption now stands at 22 per cent, the company said in a statement. This compares with approximately 18 per cent in FY2025-26. The steady growth of renewable energy in the company's overall power mix has been driven by both increased green power generation and renewable power procurement, according to the company's filing to the BSE.

Green power output rises to 892 million units

Across its business units in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, Hindustan Zinc generated 892 million units of green power during FY'26, compared with 632 million units in FY'25, PTI reported. The company has continued to strengthen its renewable power generation capabilities at these locations.

Metric FY'25 FY'26
Green energy share of power consumption ~18% 22%
Green power generation (million units) 632 892
Round-the-clock renewable agreement with Serentica Renewables 450 MW 530 MW

Serentica Renewables agreement expanded to 530 MW

To support its FY28 renewable ambition, Hindustan Zinc expanded its round-the-clock renewable energy power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW, according to the company statement.

Hindustan Zinc also said it is advancing its energy transition by upgrading power connectivity from the state transmission network to the central transmission utility, alongside implementing innovative in-house projects.

On-site initiatives: waste heat recovery and floating solar

Key initiatives highlighted by the company include:

  • Enhancing waste heat recovery boiler steam turbine generation through efficiency improvements
  • Harnessing renewable energy through floating solar installations on water ponds

These projects form part of the company's effort to build a cleaner, more resilient and energy-efficient future, as stated in its BSE filing.

Management statement

"The company is progressing towards its ambition of sourcing 70 per cent of its total electricity requirements from renewable sources by FY28," Hindustan Zinc said in a statement.

With renewable power now accounting for 22% of our power consumption and our ambition to take this to 70% by FY28, we are demonstrating that clean energy is not simply a decarbonization lever; it is fundamental to creating a more resilient, competitive and responsible business.

Amarendu Prakash, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, as reported by PTI

The announcement, published on August 19, 2026, underscores the company's stated target of approximately 70 per cent renewable power in its overall electricity mix by FY2027-28. The expansion of the round-the-clock renewable agreement with Serentica Renewables to 530 MW and the upgrade of power connectivity from the state transmission network to the central transmission utility are among the measures Hindustan Zinc said it is taking to reach that goal. For commodity analysts and procurement teams tracking the zinc supply chain, Hindustan Zinc's combination of in-house green power generation and contracted renewable supply represents a notable shift in the energy input structure of one of India's major base metals producers, based on the company's own disclosures in the BSE filing.
