Vedanta Group, a major player in India's metals, oil and gas, and critical minerals sectors, has announced a significant achievement in its sustainability efforts. The company reported a 15% reduction in metals emissions intensity since the fiscal year 2020-21.
Decarbonisation Strategy
Central to Vedanta's progress is its four-pronged decarbonisation strategy. This includes:
- Enhancing operational efficiency through advanced technologies
- Switching to cleaner fuels
- Increasing renewable energy consumption
- Offsetting residual emissions through afforestation and ecosystem restoration
"Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering, and these results are a testament to our strategic approach," said a company spokesperson.
Renewable Energy and Biomass
In the fiscal year 2025-26, Vedanta increased its renewable energy consumption by over 50% year-on-year, reaching nearly 400 crore units, equivalent to 454 MW of round-the-clock capacity. This shift helped avoid approximately 30 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
The company also utilized 365 kilotonnes of biomass as an alternative fuel, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 5-6 lakh tonnes.
Afforestation Efforts
Since 2020-21, Vedanta has planted nearly 40 lakh trees across its operational regions, with a target of 70 lakh trees by 2030. In 2025-26 alone, 10 lakh trees were planted, aiding in the restoration of mining landscapes and enhancing carbon sequestration.
| Year | Emissions Intensity (tCO₂e/tm) | Trees Planted (lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 6.45 | 0 |
| 2025-26 | 5.44 | 10 |
Outlook and Future Plans
Vedanta's ongoing commitment to sustainability is expected to continue driving down emissions intensity. The company is on track to meet its ambitious tree-planting goals and further increase its renewable energy capacity. Upcoming data releases from the company will provide more insights into its progress.
