Hydrogen of Dutch Origin (H2DO) has embarked on a significant initiative to explore offshore green hydrogen production in the Dutch part of the North Sea. The TSE-funded 'Offshore Midsized Green Hydrogen Feasibility and Concept Study' aims to demonstrate the potential of offshore hydrogen production to bolster Europe's energy autonomy. Project Overview

The study, backed by TSE funding, seeks to develop a 30-50MW offshore green hydrogen production facility. This initiative is designed to alleviate the growing congestion and bottlenecks in the Dutch electricity grid, which are exacerbated by the rapid expansion of wind capacity in the North Sea. By converting electrons into green hydrogen molecules directly at sea, the project aims to reduce the load on the electricity grid and utilize existing pipeline infrastructure for transport, potentially leading to significant energy system savings.

Supply Chain and Infrastructure

Producing green hydrogen offshore addresses several logistical challenges. It reduces the demand for scarce onshore space, as a 1GW hydrogen plant can occupy an area equivalent to 29 football fields. Additionally, it minimizes the need for freshwater in the electrolysis process, a critical consideration given the increasing scarcity of freshwater resources.

According to H2DO, the production of green hydrogen from North Sea wind resources can significantly decrease reliance on imported fossil fuels and vulnerable supply chains. Patrice Hijsterborg, managing partner at H2DO, emphasized that this approach transforms a grid challenge into an energy security opportunity by situating hydrogen production close to the wind source.
