Banks Closed in Tripura on August 19: Branch Holiday Tests Treasury Planning

Banks in Tripura will remain closed on August 19 for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur's birthday, according to Business Today. Banks Closed in Tripura on August 19: Branch Holiday Tests Treasury Planning

Banks in Tripura will remain closed on Wednesday, August 19, to mark the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, according to Business Today. The holiday applies only to Tripura; banking operations will continue as usual in states where August 19 is not a bank holiday.

For corporate treasuries and trade finance teams with exposure to Tripura, the closure narrows the window for branch-dependent transactions. Business Today reported that bank holidays differ from one state to another, as regional festivals and local observances are taken into account while preparing the holiday calendar.

Tripura Bank Holiday Details

The August 19 closure marks the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, Business Today said. The holiday is not applicable to banks across India; customers in Tripura will not be able to access bank branches on that day, while banking operations continue as usual elsewhere.

Business Today also reported that banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month under the RBI's holiday guidelines, adding a recurring monthly closure to the state-specific calendar.

State-Wise Bank Holidays Later in August

Business Today listed several state-specific bank holidays later in the month:

Date States Occasion
Aug 25 Kerala, Andhra Pradesh Milad-Un-Nabi / First Onam / Milad-i-Sherif (Birthday of Prophet Muhammed)
Aug 26 Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand Id-E-Milad / Baravafat / Milad-un-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Mohammad) / Thiruvonam
Aug 28 Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh Raksha Bandhan / Pang-Lhabsol / Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi / Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi / Ayyankali Jayanthi

Digital Banking Channels Remain Open

A bank holiday only affects branch operations, Business Today reported. Internet banking, mobile banking apps, ATMs and UPI platforms will continue to be available for services such as fund transfers, bill payments and account management. Business Today summarized the impact:

A bank holiday only affects branch operations, so customers do not have to put all banking transactions on hold.

This means electronic payment rails remain accessible even while physical branches are shut.

Implications for Treasury and Trade Finance

The key operational constraint for finance executives is the unavailability of branch-dependent instruments. Business Today said that transactions requiring a physical visit to a branch will not be available when branches are shut. These include:

  • Cheque processing
  • Issuance of demand drafts
  • Large cash transactions

Customers planning such transactions should complete them before the holiday, according to Business Today.

For trade finance teams, the suspension of demand draft issuance and cheque processing on August 19 means any transaction relying on these physical instruments must be completed ahead of the closure. Large cash transactions, also listed as requiring a branch visit, likewise need to be scheduled around the holiday.

Given that the holiday calendar varies by state, companies with operations in multiple states must track local closures to avoid settlement delays. Business Today noted that banks also remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month under RBI guidelines, a recurring constraint that applies nationwide.
