Xiamen-based bulker owner Amoysailing Maritime has booked four 82,000 dwt kamsarmaxes at Jiangsu Watts Energy & Engineering, handing the Chinese yard its first newbuilding contract, according to Splash247. The quartet is scheduled for delivery in 2028, and the deal adds another 328,000 dwt to Amoysailing's growing newbuild programme.
The order is the latest step in an aggressive fleet expansion by Amoysailing, which traces its roots in Xiamen back to 2002 and moved into shipowning in 2009, Splash247 reported. The company has expanded through a mixture of secondhand purchases and newbuildings in recent years, and its current fleet list shows 17 operating bulkers, including two 81,000 dwt ships on five-year bareboat charters.
Newbuilding deal at a glance
No price has been disclosed for the kamsarmax quartet, according to Splash247, although shipbuilding sources put standard Chinese-built 82,000 dwt kamsarmaxes at around $35m to $38m each, with higher-specification tonnage reaching about $42m. The table below summarises Amoysailing's known outstanding newbuild orders as reported by Splash247.
| Order | Vessel type | Capacity (dwt) | Units | Yard | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Latest order | Kamsarmax | 82,000 | 4 | Jiangsu Watts Energy & Engineering | 2028 |
| Late last year | Ultramax | 63,500 | 2 | Jiangsu Haitong | 2028 |
Amoysailing's kamsarmax exposure
The group already has exposure to the kamsarmax sector through ships including the 82,250 dwt June Loong and the 81,608 dwt Amoy Power, according to Splash247. The four new ships will deepen that presence when they enter service in 2028. Amoysailing also signed for two 63,500 dwt ultramaxes at Jiangsu Haitong late last year, also for delivery in 2028, after taking delivery of four sisterships from the same yard this year, the report said.
Watts Energy's first newbuilding contract
Jiangsu Watts Energy & Engineering, established in 2008, has until now concentrated on marine energy equipment, offshore structures and ship repair and conversion, Splash247 reported. Its Qidong facility covers around 660,000 sq m and includes a 270 m by 50 m marine dock and a 1,000-tonne gantry crane. The company was also part of the new Qidong repair yard venture with Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry that opened in 2024. This kamsarmax quartet marks the yard's first newbuilding contract, according to the report.
What the order means for dry bulk operators
For charterers and freight forwarders watching dry bulk supply, the Amoysailing order represents continued investment in 82,000 dwt kamsarmax tonnage. The four newbuilds will add 328,000 dwt of capacity, and the earlier ultramax pair adds a further 127,000 dwt, bringing the combined newbuild programme to 455,000 dwt across six vessels, based on the figures reported by Splash247. All deliveries are scheduled for 2028.
