The Behram Box, a containership whose construction was halted after the 2008 financial crisis, has finally been delivered and entered commercial service. This marks the revival of a long-abandoned project in Turkish shipbuilding.
Revival of the Behram Box
The vessel, with a capacity of 917 TEU, was originally ordered from Turkey's Um Shipyard. After years of dormancy, it was completed by Dentas Shipyard in Tuzla and chartered to DP World-owned Unifeeder. The ship now operates on Unifeeder's Turkey-Bulgaria shuttle, linking Ambarli with Burgas and Varna.
"The completion of the vessel highlights how buoyant charter markets and sustained demand for regional container capacity are breathing life into projects once considered permanently abandoned," noted Alphaliner.
Panama Canal Draft Restrictions
Simultaneously, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced a reduction in the maximum authorized draft for vessels transiting its neopanamax locks, effective July 3. The draft will be limited to 49.5 ft (15.09 m) due to current and projected water levels in Gatun Lake and potential El Niño developments.

| Metric | Previous | Current |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Draft | 50 ft | 49.5 ft |
| Waiting Time | 30 hours | 50 hours |
Implications for Shippers
These developments underscore the importance of strategic planning for shippers and logistics operators. The delivery of the Behram Box adds capacity to regional trades, while the Panama Canal draft restrictions could lead to increased transit times and costs.
- Shippers should consider alternative routes or advance bookings to mitigate potential delays.
- Operators need to monitor water levels and weather forecasts closely to anticipate further restrictions.
Watch List
- El Niño developments and their impact on water levels.
- Charter market trends for feeder vessels.
- Panama Canal transit slot auction prices and waiting times.
