DHT Expands VLCC Fleet with New Hanwha Order

DHT Holdings has secured a newbuilding slot with Hanwha Ocean for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), scheduled for delivery in August 2028. This move is part of DHT's ongoing fleet renewal program, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reducing emissions.

Fleet Expansion and Modernization

DHT Holdings, a New York-listed company, continues to modernize its fleet with the addition of a new VLCC from Hanwha Ocean. This vessel will join the Antelope Class series, known for their high-specification design focused on fuel efficiency and increased cargo capacity.

  • The new VLCC will be a sister ship to two vessels delivered earlier this year.
  • DHT's fleet renewal strategy includes disposing of older tonnage, such as the recent sale of the 2007-built DHT Bauhinia.

"This order reflects our continued focus on maintaining a high-quality, efficient fleet to service our customers while building long-term value for our shareholders," said Svein Moxnes Harfjeld, DHT's President and CEO.

Strategic Implications for Ocean Freight

The addition of this new VLCC is expected to enhance DHT's capacity in the global oil transportation market. With increasing demand for fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vessels, DHT's investment aligns with industry trends.

Recommendations for Shippers and Operators

Shippers and operators should monitor DHT's fleet developments as the company continues to enhance its service offerings. The introduction of new, efficient vessels could impact freight rates and capacity availability in the VLCC market.

  • Consider long-term contracts with DHT for stable rates.
  • Evaluate the environmental benefits of newer vessels in logistics planning.

Watch List

  • Global Oil Demand: Changes in oil demand could affect VLCC utilization rates.
  • Regulatory Changes: New environmental regulations may influence fleet strategies.
  • Shipyard Capacity: Monitor Hanwha's ability to meet delivery schedules amid global demand for newbuilds.

26-Year-Old Car Carrier Chang Sheng Hong Fetches $42 Million at Shanghai Auction, Triple Reserve

The 4,310-ceu car carrier Chang Sheng Hong was sold at auction in Shanghai for approximately $42 million, three times its reserve price of RMB95 million ($14 million). The 26-year-old vessel, built in 2000 at Croatia's Uljanik shipyard, had previously traded as Dresden and was renamed in 2017 after entering Chinese ownership. The sale underscores an extremely tight car carrier market driven by China's surging vehicle exports, with up to 2 million cars shipped on containerships this year.
