Executives Discuss Tech, Port Drayage, and Capacity Strategies on FreightWaves Today

The drayage sector is undergoing significant changes as coastal ports expand infrastructure, according to FreightWaves. During Monday's live FreightWaves Today show, executives from key logistics firms shared actionable strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Bo Bates, CEO of the Evans Network of Companies, emphasized the importance of optimizing chassis pools and accelerating gate-turn times to maintain fluid East Coast supply chains.

Port Drayage and Infrastructure Expansion

According to FreightWaves, Bo Bates of the Evans Network of Companies stated that carriers must leverage predictive container-tracking metrics to prevent costly port demurrage fees before cargo ever reaches the terminal floor. He noted that optimizing chassis pools and accelerating gate-turn times are critical for maintaining fluid East Coast supply chains, especially as coastal ports undergo major infrastructure expansions. These measures help reduce congestion and improve turnaround times at terminals.

Midwest Logistics Innovations

Ari Silkey , chief operating officer at Transportation Equipment Network, discussed how midwestern shippers are restructuring their regional distribution networks, as reported by FreightWaves. Silkey explained that modern logistics platforms must prioritize real-time asset visibility to combat unpredictable weather patterns and shifting rail schedules. By integrating high-velocity data points directly into route-planning software, carriers can optimize cross-docking operations and maintain reliable service levels throughout the region.

Domestic Tech Integration

Jason Provonsha , CEO of Steam Logistics, highlighted the pressing need for seamless technology integrations between domestic freight brokers and independent owner-operators, according to FreightWaves. He pointed out that manual booking processes are rapidly being replaced by automated, API-driven tendering pipelines. This technological transition not only drives down administrative costs but also allows smaller trucking fleets to instantly access high-quality spot market freight.

Collaborative Capacity Sourcing

Jeff D’Angelo , CEO of Fura, outlined the advantages of collaborative capacity networks for mid-sized shippers, per FreightWaves. D’Angelo said that co-loading and shared freight lane strategies are essential tools for combating the industry’s persistent, volatile margin pressures. By pooling shipment volume across non-competing businesses, shippers can secure reliable contract rates and build stronger, long-term carrier partnerships.

FreightWaves Today livestreams weekdays at noon ET at http://tv.freightwaves.com/. Upcoming events include the Supply Chain AI Symposium, focused on deploying AI in supply chain operations, and the F3: Future of Freight Festival in Chattanooga, TN, featuring keynotes, technology demos, and the FreightTech and Shipper of Choice awards. These gatherings offer logistics professionals further opportunities to explore solutions to the challenges discussed in the episode.

Freight Rates Soar on Capacity Crunch, Not Demand: Q2 Earnings Confirm Tight Market Through 2027

Major carriers' Q2 earnings reports indicate the freight market is tightening due to capacity constraints rather than surging demand, with spot rates at $3.53 per mile and contract rates up 18% year-over-year. Regulatory pressures and high barriers to entry are keeping capacity tight, while Brent crude oil at $100 per barrel adds fuel cost pressure. FreightWaves analysts expect the cycle to persist through at least 2027.

Tropical Storm Bertha Crawls Along Gulf Coast, Threatening Freight Logistics Through Thursday

Tropical Storm Bertha is slowly moving along the Gulf Coast, threatening significant coastal flooding and heavy rainfall that could disrupt logistics and supply chains, according to FreightWaves. Despite a predicted quiet hurricane season due to El Niño, slow-moving storms like Bertha pose serious risks to freight operations, particularly from localized heavy downpours and storm surge. Carriers and logistics managers should remain vigilant through Thursday.
