Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has launched a global tender for up to six 8,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) LNG (liquefied natural gas) dual-fuel-ready containerships in a programme worth an estimated $720m, according to Splash247. The tender reflects New Delhi's push to rebuild a national liner fleet and extends a fleet renewal drive that has already covered multiple vessel segments. Bids are due by August 31, with the tender opening scheduled for September 1.
Tender details and timeline
Splash247 reported the tender covers two firm vessels and options for a further four. The contract may ultimately be awarded to SCI, a joint venture or a special-purpose vehicle, allowing the ships to become part of the planned Bharat Container Shipping Line. The newbuildings will be LNG dual-fuel-ready, meaning they are designed for compatibility with liquefied natural gas propulsion.

Shipbuilding conditions
According to Splash247, the vessels will be built under a framework designed to support India's shipbuilding ambitions. Indian yards have the right to match the lowest qualified foreign bid. Domestic builders without experience constructing containerships of this size can participate by partnering with an overseas yard that has delivered at least two vessels above 5,000 TEU over the past decade and has LNG dual-fuel design experience. The tender also requires the successful shipyard to build the vessels at its own facilities, preventing complete outsourcing of construction.
Partners in the proposed liner
The proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line would bring together SCI, Container Corporation of India, Sagarmala Finance Corporation, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Chennai Port Authority and V O Chidambaranar Port Authority, Splash247 reported. The grouping is designed to give India a stronger presence in international liner shipping.
Operational context
The container tender follows SCI's fleet renewal drive, which has included orders for methanol-ready feeder containerships, product tankers, very large gas carriers and offshore vessels, according to Splash247. The new programme adds large LNG-ready container tonnage to that pipeline, with a ceiling of six 8,000 TEU ships if all options are exercised.
For freight forwarders, ocean carriers and port operators, the tender is a supply-side development to track because it could add national-flag container capacity through a state-backed structure. The involvement of three port authorities — Jawaharlal Nehru, Chennai and V O Chidambaranar — alongside the container logistics operator Container Corporation of India gives the planned line a wide institutional base within India's state-owned transport sector.
Watch list
- The August 31 bid deadline and September 1 opening, which will reveal which shipyards and partnerships enter the contest.
- Whether the contract is awarded to SCI, a joint venture or a special-purpose vehicle, and how that entity links to the proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line.
- Whether Indian yards exercise their right to match the lowest qualified foreign bid, determining whether domestic or overseas yards build the six vessels.
