Tesla has made a strategic move to enhance its market presence in India by reducing the price of its Model Y by up to Rs 9 lakh. This price adjustment aims to make the electric vehicle more accessible in a market where high prices have previously constrained demand.
Price Adjustment Strategy
The Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) is now priced at Rs 50.89 lakh, down from the previous Rs 59.89 lakh. Meanwhile, the Model Y Long Range RWD variant has been discontinued. This restructuring leaves Tesla with a two-model portfolio in India, including the Model Y L Premium AWD priced at Rs 61.99 lakh.
| Model Variant | Old Price (Rs) | New Price (Rs) |
|---|---|---|
| Model Y RWD | 59.89 lakh | 50.89 lakh |
| Model Y Long Range RWD | 67.89 lakh | Discontinued |
Market Context
Despite being imported from Tesla's Shanghai factory and subject to a 70% customs duty, the revised pricing places the Model Y competitively against luxury EVs like the BMW iX1 LWB and Mercedes-Benz CLA BEV. This move is seen as an effort to bridge the gap between mass-market premium vehicles and high-end luxury cars.
"By positioning the Model Y near the Rs 50 lakh mark, Tesla is seeking to widen its potential customer base," said an industry observer.
Expansion and Future Plans
Tesla's expansion in India includes establishing operations in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, with Hyderabad expected to follow. The company retailed 342 vehicles in FY26, including 43 units in April, according to FADA data.
Production Timeline
The price reduction is effective immediately, aligning with Tesla's broader strategy to capture a larger share of the growing electric vehicle market in India.
