India's construction equipment retail sales plunged 41% year-on-year in June 2026 to 5,244 units from 8,879 units in the same month last year, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). On a sequential basis, sales rose 3.1% to 5,244 units from 5,088 units in May.
Market Overview
FADA Research data shows that all major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) except JCB India recorded sales declines. The steep contraction enabled JCB to consolidate its leadership with a market share of 46%, nearly double the 27% share it held a year earlier. An industry official said nearly "one out of every two wheeled construction equipment units sold in June" bore JCB's badge.

JCB Strengthens Leadership
JCB India maintained sales at 2,416 units year-on-year, defying the industry downtrend. Its market share jumped to 46% from 27% in June 2025, making it the only OEM to hold steady volumes. This performance enabled JCB to strengthen its position as the market leader.
Smaller Players Post Mixed Results
Action Construction Equipment Ltd (ACE) retained the second spot despite sales dropping to 624 units from 901 units. Its market share improved to 11.90% from 10.15%, reflecting a relatively better performance compared with the broader market, according to FADA data.
Ajax Engineering sold 413 units (down from 660), and its market share edged up to 7.88% from 7.43%. Escorts Kubota Construction Equipment also improved its share to 7.25% from 5.83%, though sales fell to 380 units from 518. Among smaller manufacturers, Bull Machines increased its market share to 3.11% from 2.23% despite lower absolute volumes.
Analyst Views
Poonam Upadhyay, Director at Crisil Ratings, attributed the year-on-year decline to a combination of a high base and a subdued demand environment for wheeled construction equipment. She noted:
"Modest sequential improvement offers little change in the underlying narrative, particularly as monsoon months typically see slower project execution and lower equipment deployment. Demand continues to be weighed down by execution bottlenecks, land acquisition delays and uneven capex deployment, keeping fleet utilisation below levels that would justify fresh capacity additions."
The data underscores ongoing challenges in India's construction equipment sector, with execution bottlenecks and seasonal factors constraining demand despite a modest sequential recovery.
