India's Manufacturing Surge: Atmanirbhar Bharat's Global Impact

India is steadily emerging as a preferred global manufacturing destination under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India 2.0. This initiative aims to transform India into a self-reliant nation by boosting its manufacturing capabilities.

Quality as a Foundation

Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, emphasized that quality is not merely a manufacturing objective but the foundation of consumer trust. Addressing the FICCI-BIS conference on ‘Quality Systems for Global Manufacturing Competitiveness’ in New Delhi, she highlighted the need for India to focus on becoming a quality leader for global markets over the next 25 years.

"The competitiveness of a nation will depend on the ability to build resilient and future-ready manufacturing ecosystems," said Nidhi Khare.

Aligning Standards Globally

Sanjay Garg, Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), noted that around 94% of Indian standards are aligned with global standards, with efforts underway to align more. He mentioned that the Mandatory Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery was introduced in June 2021, and today there are over 2.2 lakh BIS Registered Jewellers.

Government Initiatives

The government is working towards providing Ease of Doing Business and decriminalizing various laws to promote private sector investment in cluster-based testing infrastructure. This is part of the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aiming for a developed India by 2047.
