SONAR's Hackathon to Tackle Driver App Shortage

FreightWaves SONAR is set to launch its inaugural virtual Driver App Shortage Hackathon (DASH) from June 15–22, 2026, aiming to address the lack of software designed specifically for truck drivers.

Solving an Underserved Challenge

The hackathon seeks to redirect development efforts towards the 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the U.S., who are often overlooked in favor of fleet managers, dispatchers, and brokers. DASH is designed to focus on creating solutions that enhance the daily lives, wellness, and retention of these drivers, who are crucial to the $800 billion annual U.S. trucking industry.

Investment Opportunities

Participants in the hackathon will have free access to the SONAR freight data API, which provides market data used by major shippers, carriers, and brokers. This access is intended to help developers create high-quality applications. The competition is open globally, free to enter, and allows developers to retain 100% of their intellectual property. Projects will be evaluated by a panel of freight operators, FreightWaves executives, and venture capital investors, offering finalists exposure to potential funding and scaling opportunities.

Get Registered

Registration is open to anyone interested in building software that supports the backbone of American freight. Participants are encouraged to sign up to secure their free SONAR API access and contribute to improving the trucking industry.

Watch List

  • Supply Chain AI Symposium: A gathering of operators, founders, and enterprise leaders to discuss AI deployment in supply chains.
  • F3: Future of Freight Festival: Featuring keynotes, technology demos, and networking opportunities in Chattanooga, including the inaugural F3 Awards Dinner.

The hackathon represents a significant opportunity for developers to make a meaningful impact on the trucking industry by addressing the specific needs of truck drivers. By participating, developers can gain valuable exposure and potentially secure investment to bring their innovative solutions to market.
