ExxonMobil awards $1.1bn in Mozambique LNG project deals ahead of FID

US supermajor ExxonMobil has awarded approximately $1.1bn in pre-investment contracts for equipment supporting the Rovuma LNG Phase 1 development in Mozambique, according to Splash247. The awards cover subsea production systems, valves, line pipe and lined pipe, and are designed to start fabrication before a final investment decision (FID) on the project.

Contract awards and scope

According to Splash247, OneSubsea received the largest contract, with Aker Solutions Mozambique supporting in-country work on engineering, procurement, fabrication, and manufacturing services for subsea production systems, controls, and umbilicals. Advanced Technology Valve was awarded a deal for engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing and delivery of large-bore production valves. Corinth Pipeworks won a contract to manufacture, coat, test, preserve, and store submerged arc welded line pipe, while Sumitomo will do the same for seamless line pipe. Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals was awarded the final deal, covering mechanically lined pipe, induction bends, weld overlay products, and associated line pipe systems.

The full contract breakdown, as reported by Splash247:

  • OneSubsea – largest contract; subsea production systems, controls, and umbilicals.
  • Aker Solutions Mozambique – in-country engineering, procurement, fabrication, and manufacturing services.
  • Advanced Technology Valve – large-bore production valves.
  • Corinth Pipeworks – submerged arc welded line pipe.
  • Sumitomo – seamless line pipe.
  • Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals – mechanically lined pipe, induction bends, weld overlay products, and associated line pipe systems.
Company Scope of work
OneSubsea Subsea production systems, controls, and umbilicals (largest contract)
Aker Solutions Mozambique In-country engineering, procurement, fabrication, and manufacturing services
Advanced Technology Valve Engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing and delivery of large-bore production valves
Corinth Pipeworks Manufacture, coat, test, preserve, and store submerged arc welded line pipe
Sumitomo Same scope for seamless line pipe
Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals Mechanically lined pipe, induction bends, weld overlay products, and associated line pipe systems

Pre-FID rationale

According to ExxonMobil, awarding these contracts before FID optimises project execution timelines and helps ensure the availability of critical infrastructure. Splash247 reported that the contracts will enable suppliers to begin fabricating and manufacturing materials that require significant quantities and specialised equipment, with extended delivery schedules.

Rovuma LNG project scope

The Rovuma LNG Project includes developing significant offshore gas resources in Area 4 and an onshore LNG facility with a planned production capacity of 18.6 mtonnes of LNG per year, according to Splash247.

Commenting on the awards, Johanna Boothey, lead country manager, ExxonMobil Mozambique, said:

These contract awards represent another important step forward for the Rovuma LNG project and reflect the strong commitment of the Area 4 co-venturers to responsibly develop Mozambique’s world-class natural gas resources.

The Area 4 co-venturers, as referenced by Boothey, are backing the project's development.

Supply chain and delivery timelines

Splash247 noted that these contracts cover materials requiring significant quantities and specialised equipment, with extended delivery schedules. The pre-FID awards are intended to optimise project execution timelines and ensure the availability of critical infrastructure, according to ExxonMobil.

In total, the six contractors span engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing and delivery across subsea and pipeline segments. OneSubsea and Aker Solutions Mozambique cover subsea production systems, while Advanced Technology Valve, Corinth Pipeworks, Sumitomo and Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals handle valve and line pipe components. Splash247 reported the contracts represent approximately $1.1bn in pre-investment spend, positioning the Rovuma LNG Phase 1 project to move forward once the final investment decision is taken.
