India's clean fuel initiative is gaining momentum with a significant price reduction for E85 fuel. State-run oil marketing companies are set to offer E85 petrol at a Rs 20 per litre discount compared to E20 petrol, as announced by Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. This discount aims to offset the lower energy content of ethanol, which is about one-third less than petrol.
Ethanol Blending Strategy
The E85 fuel blend, consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, is part of India's broader strategy to increase ethanol usage. The government plans to expand ethanol dispensing stations, starting with 50 to 100 stations in Delhi-NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur. By the end of 2026, this network is expected to grow to 500 stations, reaching 5,000 by 2027.
"The simultaneous introduction of compatible vehicles and fuel stations will support wider adoption of E85 fuel," said Hardeep Singh Puri.
Supply and Demand Dynamics
India's push for ethanol is also driven by the need to reduce its fossil fuel import bill, which stands at approximately $120 billion. The introduction of flex-fuel vehicles by companies like Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp is expected to increase ethanol demand by 311.8 crore litres, generating significant income for farmers.
Economic and Environmental Impact
The transition to ethanol-blended fuels is not only economically beneficial but also environmentally friendly. The government has already achieved a 20% ethanol blending with petrol, resulting in foreign exchange savings of Rs 1.84 lakh crore by replacing 302 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil.
| Fuel Type | Ethanol Content | Price Difference |
|---|---|---|
| E20 | 20% | Base Price |
| E85 | 85% | Rs 20/litre cheaper |
Future Outlook
The Indian government's commitment to ethanol is clear, with plans to make Euro VI vehicles compatible with E100 fuel. This move is expected to further reduce the country's dependency on imported fossil fuels. The expansion of ethanol infrastructure and vehicle compatibility will be crucial in achieving these goals.
