Oil India Uncovers Natural Gas in Andaman Sea

Oil India Limited has made a significant breakthrough in its offshore exploration efforts with the discovery of natural gas in the Andaman Sea. The discovery was made in the Sri Vijayapuram-3 well, located approximately 15 km off the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 meters. The well was drilled to a depth of over 1,900 meters in the Eocene formation, where continuous flaring during initial production testing indicated the presence of natural gas.

Exploration Efforts

The discovery is part of the Indian government's Samudra Manthan Mission, a national initiative to expand deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration across India's offshore basins. According to Hardeep Puri, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, this initiative is crucial for fully exploiting India's hydrocarbon reserves.

"An ocean of energy opportunities reinforced in the Andaman Sea! Very happy to report the presence of natural gas in Sri Vijayapuram-3," said Puri.

Supply Side Developments

Oil India Limited is currently conducting gas sampling to assess the composition and calorific value of the gas, along with isotope studies to understand its origin. The presence of hydrocarbons has now been reported in two out of three exploratory wells drilled in the current campaign in the Andaman Basin.

Demand and Market Impact

The discovery is expected to bolster India's energy security by increasing domestic natural gas production. This aligns with the broader push to reduce reliance on imported hydrocarbons and meet the growing energy demand within the country.

Future Outlook

The Indian government plans to continue its exploration ambitions in coordination with global deepwater exploration experts. The success of the Samudra Manthan Mission could lead to further discoveries and enhance India's position in the global energy market.

Well Name Location Depth (meters) Hydrocarbon Presence
Sri Vijayapuram-3 15 km off Andaman Islands 1,900+ Yes
Other Wells Various locations in Andaman Varies Mixed

The upcoming data releases and further exploration results will be closely monitored by industry stakeholders to assess the potential impact on global natural gas markets.

India Signed 8.4 mtpa of Long-Term LNG Contracts in 2025, Leading Global Buyer: GIIGNL

India was the most active buyer of long-term LNG contracts in 2025, signing 8.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) across six entities, according to the International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers (GIIGNL). The global LNG contracting market saw 83 long-term sale purchase agreements (SPAs) totaling 71.6 mtpa, nearly double the 47 SPAs in 2024. The report also highlighted risks from the West Asia conflict, including an attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal and reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.

Time Is Ticking for Oil Reserves: Crack Spreads Hit Record as Refined Product Markets Tighten

The US-Iran peace agreement came under strain on July 7, sending crude prices higher. However, crack spreads have hit a fresh all-time high of $69.16/barrel, indicating refined product markets are tighter than crude markets due to supply constraints, not demand. EIA data shows distillate and gasoline inventories below 5-year averages.
