Assam's GI-tagged Tezpur litchi reaches Dubai, Singapore in landmark export

India has exported its first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur litchi from Assam to Dubai, with a one-metric-tonne shipment on June 7, followed by additional exports to Singapore. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the shipments, which secured farmers nearly 10% higher prices than domestic market rates. The exports mark a milestone for premium agricultural products from Northeast India.

India has exported its first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur litchi from Assam to Dubai, marking a milestone in efforts to expand overseas markets for agricultural products from the Northeast, according to the commerce ministry. The one-metric-tonne consignment, exported on June 7, was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the ministry reported.

First Shipment to Dubai

According to the commerce ministry, the export represents a step forward in promoting premium agricultural products from the North Eastern Region in international markets. The fruit is known for its sweetness, bright-red colour, distinctive aroma and eating quality. Tezpur is known for cultivating several litchi varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi.

“The Geographical Indication (GI) status has strengthened the identity and market recognition of Tezpur Litchi, enhancing its appeal among international buyers and creating new opportunities for premium agricultural exports from Assam,” the ministry said.

Singapore Market Opens

In a parallel development, the export of 500 kilograms of the renowned “Piyaji” variety of litchi to Singapore marks the beginning of a new chapter for Assam’s farming community, according to the Economic Times. The 500-kg consignment was flagged off by the Chief Minister of Assam and will be transported via a Druk Air flight operating from Bhutan via Guwahati. The Singapore High Commissioner has already expressed interest in procuring an additional 500 kilograms of Tezpur litchis, the Chief Minister said.

Earlier, during the recently concluded Tezpur Litchi Festival 2026, around one tonne of litchis was exported to Dubai while an additional 600 kg
