India, US Forge Pact on Critical Minerals, Rare Earths

India and the United States have solidified their strategic partnership by signing a bilateral framework agreement focused on securing the supply chain of critical minerals and rare earths. This agreement, signed in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the Quad Foreign Ministers' meeting, marks a significant step in enhancing cooperation across the entire supply chain, including mining, processing, and recycling.

Strategic Importance

The agreement is timely, given the global race to secure critical minerals essential for energy systems and emerging technologies. EAM Jaishankar emphasized the importance of resilient and diversified supply chains, stating, "It will strengthen resilient and diversified supply chains, help us to collaborate and financing and with the effective management of critical minerals and rare earths."

Background and Development

The groundwork for this agreement was laid on February 4th at the Critical Minerals Forum in Washington, D.C. The momentum continued with India's participation in Paxilla, highlighting the shared strategic interest in preventing monopolistic control over these essential materials.

"Vibrant innovation economies such as ours cannot afford to leave the foundational materials of these industries vulnerable to single source monopolies," said Marco Rubio.

Economic and Security Implications

Reliable and diversified critical mineral supply chains are indispensable for economic growth and national security. The US is actively working with partners to ensure these supply chains are robust and secure.
